I was actually wondering why there wasn’t a vaccine tho just the other day. What gives? What actually makes HIV so tricky?

One of the main reasons up until now is that no one has recovered from HIV alone, so the body has never triggered the type of immune response to deal with it. And traditional vaccines work by triggering an immune response. Also HIV mutates incredibly fast, it doesn't fundamentally change the way the virus works. But it gives it limitless ways of getting in (abundance of different spike proteins and things)  also it's an auto immune disease  so it attacks the very thing you need to get rid of it, and left un checked it'll replicate inside your white T cells and destroy them. and the reason we can't cure it is because of how insidious the disease is.  Once it is in the body and making copies it becomes difficult to hunt down because it infiltrates T Cells. The meds can stop it multiplying but it cannot kill off the dormant HIV virus left over  inside the cell, if you stopped taking the meds it'll eventually 'wake up' and begin multiplying again.

The majority of viruses can be destroyed by your immune system, HIV cannot. Vaccines trigger an immune response when the virus enters your body and destroys it before it takes hold. You can't cure a virus like a bacterial infection with antibiotics. You can only manage symptoms Your body has to do the heavy lifting, that's why it's important to stay healthy and workout, eat well, to give your body the best chance to be able to fight things off itself. They will find a cure for HIV eventually, and they will work out how to cure other viral infections but it is extremely difficult. A virus sits inside a cell, to cure it you would need to destroy the whole cell, your body knows how to do that safely.

A vaccine is to prevent GETTING a virus. There is no way to cure a virus like HIV. The same with herpes. If you contract the herpes virus, you will have it for life. It’s not a bacterial infection that can be cured with antibiotics.

a vaccine is great but they need to focus on helping the already infected patients first, a HIV cure ideally. some have been waiting decades for a cure. hiv negative people are okay, they’re not in need like hiv positive people are.

in a positive perspective however, this is amazing news. eventually it’ll prevent further victims from the disease and thats such an exciting thing.

but please also be careful. make sure you’re still keeping to a consistent partner + getting tested every 3 months. this vaccine will not prevent other potential permanent STIs like herpes, hepatitis etc

and always bring/wear protection!

Better accessibility to medication would be better. That’s almost as good as a “cure” right now. So that combined with a preventative vaccine is major in stopping new cases. If new cases are stopped and current ones are suppressed and non transmittable that is HUGE. An actually out right cure will take years though. The specifics of HIV just make it borderline impossible to totally eradicate it from the body like other common viruses - the fact we have common medications that can treat and suppress it now is an astonishing breakthrough in itself.

You can’t cure a virus though. Only manage symptoms until your body fights it off. But unfortunately those currently with HIV will never have the anti-bodies to fight it off. They are stuck with it for life.

HIV treatment is already pretty good, however.  I’m sure they will find better treatment as time goes on (eg: a pill that you take once a week/month instead of daily, etc)

But the reality is in order to save people from HIV, we will have to trigger an immune response so people can fight it off. Unfortunately those who already have it are stuck with it.

Sorry, I was trying to make a joke about being undesirable, plus I don’t have sex because people are rotten and I am genuinely horrified of STI’s. I appreciate your caring response.
