The annual television licence feewill increase by £1.50 from April, it has been announced.

This means the cost of a TV licence for a year will rise from £157.50 to £159 from April 1. The new cost equates to 43p per day, the BBC said.

Audiences have to pay the fee to watch any live TV on any channel and device or to watch any shows on BBC iPlayer.

Last year, there was a bigger increase, when the cost went up £3 from £154.50.

The fee is set by the government, which announced in 2016 that it would rise in line with inflation for five years from April 2017.

Those buying or renewing a licence after April 1 will have to pay the new fee. Meanwhile, those already buying a licence on an instalment scheme which started before that date will continue to make payments totalling £157.50 until their licence comes up for renewal.

The cost of an annual black and white licence will rise from £53.00 to £53.50.

The fee, which the BBC relies on for funds, has been a point of contention in recent years.

In 2020, it was announced over-75s would have to pay for the licence from August.

Over-75s had previously been granted the TV licence for free. But the BBC said it could not afford to continue the universal benefit.

Not for owning a TV, only if you use it to watch live TV :bear:. You don't need one if you use it for Netflix, DVDs, gaming etc. The BBC uses a licence fee in place of having adverts. But it's stupid because you may watch other channels and never watch BBC... and you still need to pay it :neyde:

I'm honestly conflicted on having to pay for a tv licence in the UK because even though it's archaic the BBC delivers some really good content on multiple platforms. I live in Australia but I'm from England and trust me the arts/entertainment industry in Australia is non existent. UK has it's own culture and BBC produces some excellent tv shows, radio 1 etc. I think the system just needs to modernise and get with the times.

Honestly don’t pay it. The content on the BBC is absolutely rubbish plus they cover up paedophiles. You are better sticking to the streaming services

It is so annoying having to pay this every year, I hardly ever watch live TV but I do stream things on BBC iPlayer and occasionally I'll inevitably watch something as it happens - feels like such a waste of money though. Honestly I'd rather they just had advertisers, it's daft we have to pay this fee and are still stuck with adverts for the vast majority of other channels anyway.

Maybe I'll cancel mine this year and see how I go on.

Do you use the streaming services by any chance? If you aren’t watching live tv, just cancel it.

I mostly just use Netflix and some other services, but there are things on iPlayer I like to watch - I reckon I could live without it though... I think I will cancel it

iPlayer barely even checks if you have a tv licence, it's just a yes or no button. It's like putting a lone gate in a field, you can still go around that gate very easily.

bionic

I wouldn't care to pay if it meant I had access to good quality TV and well maintained infrastructure
