At several points during the attack on Congress there was literally just one unmanned door between an armed, uncontrolled mob of domestic terrorists and a large number of elected officials including the Vice President

He should be convicted. There is no defense for this. But there were too many republican senators that have already decided to give him a pass because they decided that he can't be impeached after he has left office. That's all the republicans want is a way out, that keeps them in the good graces of Trump voters. I think Trump would be looking for a plea deal if this was a criminal case, but it's not, and there is no plea deal to be had.

He needs to...otherwise there is 100% guarantee he will try running again in 2024 and this time his demented followers and their new recruits will flood the polls and he may have a chance at winning again...as scary as that sounds

All of this can be prevented if they just do the right thing and impeach him...**** political party loyalty...where is the blind justice?

Politicians almost always vote along party lines, so I said no.

For a moment, imagine if Obama had incited a coup and Democrats didn't vote to convict him in an impeachment trial. The Republicans would have used the lines of "they hate the USA and they hate democracy". Yet, when Trump has incited a coup, their response is "well... let's just move on" or "it's unconstitutional to convict a former president".

Yet it is these actions and attitudes that contribute to political disillusionment.

An attack on a US base in Benghazi happened, 4 people died.

Republicans created 5 separate committees in the house (oversight/government reform, foreign affairs, the judiciary, armed services, and house intelligence), 2 in the senate (homeland security/governmental affairs, senate intelligence) and 1 for a house committee on Benghazi.

They also called a former secretary Clinton (private citizen at the time) to congressional hearings and even had her sit through 11 hours of questioning from her political opponents.

She didn't flinch.

Millions of tax dollars and several years of investigation later and nothing is found.

Flash forward - after his election loss, Donald Trump assembles a group of alt-right conspiracy nuts with guns and literally tells them to "march down Pennsylvania avenue to the capitol building and fight like Hell!". They attempt an armed coup of the US government at his direction. 5 people died, hundreds of representatives and leaders were in directly and lethal danger and Republicans' response boils down to "Let's just move on, huh? Holding him accountable will just divide us further "

OT: No, they won't convict Trump. Then he'll run in 2024 and lose.

No unity without accountability. Republicans are trash until they can prove they have spines and morals instead of bloody hands and bottomless pockets.

Of course. He was in on it and needs to be expelled and convicted, same as Trump.

His behaviour, if the Tweet is true, is also in violation of the proceeding rules as agreed by both parties (something about not distracting other members and not conducting other work during the proceedings).

Of course, the party leaders agreed against enforcement mechanisms so Hawley could take a dump on the Senate floor and get away with it

I'm still dumbfounded that Trump isn't in jaii, but leaving that aside I don't understand what the Republicans are doing. If they don't stamp out Trumpism (which is anything but conservative) it will destroy them, and here they have a perfect opportunity to get rid of him, but it looks like they're not going to do it.

Did you guys hear the tapes of the officers calling for help? They were literally yelling for help and so scared. It makes me sick to my stomach.
