The Weeknd's 'The Highlights' becomes the most streamed album on Spotify

I think one of the good things about the streaming era is it's made crystal clear the way the music industry twists things to make them sound better than they are.

You can just repackage up your existing work and now it's "THE MOST STREAMED ALBUM OF ALL TIME" ok...cool...

It's just a meaningless title isn't it, everyone knows the reason. Not taking anything away from the Weeknd's success, he is amazing, but grandiose claims like this from labels/streaming services are so transparent and daft.

A bit off topic but I do think it's interesting how streaming is redefining success; you can be number one for a week and then plummet off the charts never to be seen again, but it's all good because the label can say you hit that top spot. It's making it more and more clear that a stable fanbase, longevity and slow burn success is WAY more impressive than flash in the pan hits. It's why Gaga is so impressive, her career is built to last. This isn't in reference to the Weeknd by the way (obviously he has a massive fanbase and longevity), it's just a general observation.

If Gaga did this Billboard would drag her and so would the media saying she was “manipulating” the streams. :smh:

So you're telling me Gaga can make an album titled "This is all my songs" and include all her songs and have the most streamed album of all time? Love this concept!

Gaga's whole catalog would still not oustream this compilation :poot:

Greatest hits in the streaming era makes 0 sense. We also need to stop with all these random 'X album is now the most streamed album of all time' or these random 'X album is now the most streamed deluxe album released by an artist under 32 who was born in January'  so called achievements. I remember some folks on twitter saying 'Brightest Blue' was one of the most streamed and successful album of 2020, and yet it survived two weeks in the top 200 -_-'

Greatest hits compilations also raise many questions : Will all the streams from his singles now count for this greatest hits ? Does this mean putting out a greatest hit in the streaming era literally kills any legs that studio albums can have ? Does a stream count for both the greatest hit and its respective album ?

okay Abel I love you but this is kinda silly

Y’all do realize he didn’t make these Spotify rules right? It ain’t his fault Spotify doesn’t count these songs as new. These are all preexistent streams, he’s not gaining 12 billion streams all of a sudden :smh:

Also people say Dua Lipa’s debut is the most streamed female album of all time, but that’s counting the complete edition where she tacked in One Kiss, Kiss and Make Up, Scared To Be Lonely, Electricity, and No Lie. Songs that had been previously released and weren’t a part of the album. And she’s doing it again with this Moonlight Edition. That’s just how things work in the streaming era.

I don't think my joke implied that he made the rules, it's just funny that you can have the most streamed album of all time by making a playlist of your hits.

Honestly don't see what the problem is other than stans getting worked up over a 'record'. It's a good idea from Abel/his label before he performs at the Superbowl, people are gonna wanna listen to his music afterwards and what better way than to listen to songs from the beginning of his career to now? :yennefer:

I know in this case, but it kinda shines light on all those albums who have good ,,debut,, numbers but they included number from lead single that was like 1 year before released, which is so dumb to me
