‘I’m not going to start my administration by breaking a promise to the American people,’ Biden tells House Democrats

In yet another sign that he intends to plow ahead with his $1.9 trillion Covid-relief plan, Joe Biden told House Democrats on a call on Wednesday “it’s not in the cards” to whittle down that proposal to the $618bn outline the GOP has put together.

“I’m not going to start my administration by breaking a promise to the American people,” Mr Biden said on the call with the House Democratic caucus, CNN reported.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker Nancy Pelosi initiated the so-called “budget reconciliation” process earlier this week that will allow Senate Democrats, who control a 50-50 Senate by virtue of Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaker vote, to pass the administration’s massive Covid aid package on a simple majority basis, side-stepping the Senate’s traditional 60-vote threshold.

Good for him. I am all for both political parties trying to work together and I do commend Biden on referencing unity as much as he can. HOWEVER, if the republicans aren't going to play ball and they refuse to give Americans another $1400, then democrats should plow ahead. They have the majority power to do so.

This. Also, Republicans had a "counter" that wasn't even above 1/3 of the original bill. They weren't serious with their negotiations from the beginning.

Awesome. The GOP's idea of bipartisanship is Democrats putting their own ideals and priorities aside to cave in to Republican demands.

WE control the house. WE control the senate. WE control the executive branch.

Basically, kick rocks bitches :v:

That’s what they are doing. Biden made it clear to congressional Dems that they can’t be stuck in negotiations and nothing happen. Dems are already quickly moving to pass his 1.9T stimulus plan. It should hopefully be passed by the 9th. The only thing that was standing in the way was possibly Manchin going against it but he said he will support it (and voted to move it forward yesterday)

They’re still exerting power they shouldn’t have. They still control the senate congressional committees because Reps are stonewalling senate Dems so they don’t remove the filibuster like Republicans did before. Without that piece of organizational legislation for this new congressional session they can’t take the control.

Where are my $2,000? Democrats in Georgia and Biden ran on $2K stimulus checks.

We want them NOW.

This will hurt them if it’s not done.

They’re doing $1,400+$600 but they literally ran on $2,000

Good for him, but it's only been 2 weeks guys. There's still 4 more years to go and anything can happen so let's not saint him just yet.

This is a false headline, actually.

Biden promised $2000 and now it has come down to a means-tested $1400.

He *already* caved, broke his promise, and lied.

Anything that the Democrats can do without Republican participation, just go for it. The Repubs are too busy defending impeached presidents, insurrectionist traitors, and conspiracy lunatics to be bothered with pandemic relief.
