asfittingasmcqueen 2,010
Last night I made a thread to share Mark Ronson's statement on the writing process of Joanne (the song). He uploaded a video on tiktok saying how (at the time) they had been discussing a lot about jazz music and that the genre inspired Gaga to create a song about her aunt. After reading all of your comments, a lot of things started to make sense to me, which makes me believe that the original LG5 was supposed to be a jazz album (at least at some point). Evidence so far: - Cheek to Cheek was the album that pushed Gaga as a vocalist. And because of it's success, she gained a completely different audience in a genre that she wasn't known for. - One of the songs revealed to have been scrapped from C2C was Paradise, her first original jazz composition. The track was inspired by a poem about Heaven that Joanne wrote before her death. - For her following project, Gaga chose to work with Mark Ronson, known for being one of the main producers of Back to Black, by Amy Winehouse (which could hint at the sound that Gaga originally had in mind for LG5) - They recycled the idea behind Gaga's first original jazz track and came up with Joanne (the song). - During 2015, Gaga teased a dark, rebellious aesthetic on social media with captions and titles alluding to "jazzpunk", which led to a lot of speculation - While Joanne ended up as a country inspired album, tracks like Come To Mama and Just Another Day (both featuring Brian Newman) are proof that there could've been more songs with a jazz influence that either: 1) didn't make the cut, or 2) changed during production What do you guys think? Windowlicker 3,579
Joanne as an album was originally very 70s folk and stripped down when Gaga played it for the label. They brought BloodPop on after that to make the tracks more modern as well as write new material.
NFRatwell 23,290
In 2015 Gaga was both recording music with Tony and making pop music with RedOne. All the songs she made with Mark came in 2016 (Angel Down is a reworked RedOne Collab). While it’s possible and evident she wasn’t afraid to have jazz influences, I don’t think Joanne was ever meant to be anything but pop. The genres she features in the album are pretty diverse, but overall it’s still a pop album and she was writing it to put out a new pop album by the end of the year. Just Another Day was one of the last songs to be recorded by the way, both the bonus tracks were.

That's the complain some (a very small minority) had about C2C, that it was a homage to classic jazz and not a new, Gaga-y spin to it. Former First Lady of the United States.
