Covid mortality down dramatically since start of pandemic, study finds

Death rates among people who end up in intensive care with Covid-19 have improved dramatically since the start of the pandemic thanks to advances in treatment, new research has found.

The proportion of those worst affected by the disease who die from it has fallen from 60% when it first appeared early last year to 36% by October, the study of global trends shows.

That drop continues a positive trend that saw the mortality of almost 60% seen at the end of March decrease to 42% at the end of May, it reports.

Mortality in most regions of the world is now 30%-40%, they found. For example, the average in Europe is 33.4% and in North America 40%. However, mortality in Victoria state in Australia, which includes Melbourne, is unusually low at 11%. And it is unusually high, at 62%, in the Middle East, based on a study of four countries there.

The improvement is due to the greater use of steroids such as dexamethasone and changes in the way Covid patients receive oxygen therapy and fluids and how the risk of blood clots is managed.

Yeah it's pretty bad here. I'm from Lebanon and the number of deaths in way too high (we've been having between like 45-65 deaths every day). The positivity rate also reached a HORRIBLE level yesterday (>35%) and the number of tests has been decreasing over the past 10 days or so. Idk what's even happening at this point, but yesterday we had 5682 tests only and 2020 of them were positive??? wtf 

Hospitals have mostly reached full capacity, people aren't even being admitted to the ER in many hospitals and some of them are being treated in parking lots or even sent home with oxygen when they need ICUs. It's f*cking terrible.

Similar situation regarding numbers was in Croatia 2 months ago, but thankfully we didn't reach full capacity in hospitals. Now the numbers are much lower, since the government introduced stricter rules.

Wait. What? I think they're phrasing something wrong. It's the mortality rate for severe cases, not the mortality rate overall, right? Otherwise it wouldn't make sense at all, of course not 62% who get Covid here die from it.

Yes! It's about the percentage of deaths among the people that end up in intensive care.
