If a trans woman was offended by it who are you to dictate how they feel? Also I don't think drag race is a fair comparison as almost the entirety of the casts are made up of gay men... It’s not a very good joke, but to call this offensive is going overboard. Have many transwomen been offended by it? I’m not dictating how they should feel personally, I’m just saying that as a community as a whole we can’t stop and be offended at very minor infractions against us. I’m not into respectability politics at large, but if straight and cis people feel as though our community is legalistic and ready to lash out at them for telling a joke about trans people they will likely disengage from their support. We have to pick our battles. A 2 second joke on SNL is not worth it. Are you saying any comedy focusing on LGBT people is off limits? That’s going to make us look like the “snowflakes” we are often accused of being.

Same way you don’t have to be a POC to know when something is racist, you don’t have to be gay/bi to know something is homophobic, you don’t have to be a woman to know when something is misogynistic, etc etc etc

This is a very harmless joke, told to an audience that was obviously pro-trans based on their response to Biden’s decision. This is very different from comedians telling homophobic jokes back in the 80s. As minority groups become more accepted, jokes about them need to become more accepted as well. This pearl clutching about everything is why so many legit allies to the LGBT community feel intimidated and like they’re walking on eggshells. People on drag race make jokes about tucking all the time, and many trans people have a sense of humor about themselves. This joke is at least better than the “I identify as an attack helicopter” jokes from six years ago. doesn't change the fact that the joke was not funny, it is THE low hanging fruit of comedy. And just personally I think there's something inherently wrong with the way people think about how prosecuted minorities "can't take a joke". It's like... what's the point of the joke? Trans people still aren't any less marginalized just because they're now legally allowed to be enslaved by the US military. Is the joke "Now that the orange buffon is out of the office and the government poses less of an actual threat to trans people, we, the general public can finally start making fun of trans people's genitals without feeling like we're contributing to the problem. We stan equality, we hate everyone equally uwu" If you wanna make fun of transgender people... maybe inform yourself about discourse in the community and clown bimbos like Blaire White or neo-marxist trans cat girl twitter accounts who think Josef Stalin is their daddy and would have not thrown them into concentration camps because they're "different". Like, who gets the final say? Is there an objective answer to this because to me it seems (like with all humour), no matter how controversial or insensitive, it's still subjective. And everyone is entitled to find something funny or unfunny. You can have a problem with a joke of course, but to make everyone else have a problem with it and potentially act like your view is the only one, I have a problem with. Anyone is entitled to find something funny or unfunny. That's exactly my point, that it comes down to how the individual feels instead of grouping people together as if they all share the same brain, it's just lazy thinking. This segment on SNL covers news topics, sometimes news topics will include LGBT people. This joke was dumb, but it was not an offensive joke by most metrics. The fact that some trans people tuck is just a fact of life. I have watched many documentaries and known transgender people. I am more informed on the community than the average American by far, to say that I can't have an opinion on transgender jokes is ridiculous. Terfs and right-wingers make OFFENSIVE jokes about trans people, but SNL has to balance respecting a marginalized community and also not tiptoeing around a community completely. I don't like Blaire White.
TEANUS 14,775
The mental gymnastics people have to go through in the 21st century to decide if something is offensive or not Imagine finding things causing no physical, emotional, or mental harm dangerous. Let’s direct our attention to areas of concern and actual places in the world where LGBTQ+ individuals are genuinely slaughtered just for being born. Not that we should ignore homegrown issues, but I don’t think a person of minority on SNL making a harmless joke about another minority while also applauding advances of the latter minority should be our biggest concern in 2021 British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS

This joke was not especially vindictive or transphobic. It doesn't include misgendering, violence or cross a boundary of mockery about trans individuals or use transphobic slurs.
