Supersonic 49,376
Myanmar's military has confirmed it has taken control of the country after Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders were arrested in the early hours. The coup comes after tensions rose between the civilian government and the military following a disputed election. Hours after the arrests, military television confirmed it was declaring a state of emergency for one year. Myanmar, also known as Burma, was ruled by the military until democratic reforms began in 2011. In November's election, Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) won enough seats to form a government. The army says the vote was fraudulent. The newly-elected lower house of parliament was due to convene for the first time on Monday but the military was calling for a postponement. The military said it was handing power to commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing. Soldiers are on the streets of the capital, Naypyitaw, and the main city, Yangon. Mobile internet data connections and some phone services have been disrupted in major cities, while the state broadcaster MRTV says it is having technical issues and is off air. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-55882489

They are the ones seizing control. Aung San might have been ineffectual but this is certainly terrible news for Myanmar.

And while the country was democratic since 2011, it was the military that allowed these democratic reforms (aka, this was a "revolution" from the elites and not from the public) and still had HUGE control over the government. This is the military saying "yeah no this got a bit too democratic for us, you might even end up apologizing for the genocides we comitted so prison for you honey"

Emvee 8,845
It’s ALWAYS the ****ing right-wing that claims voter fraud, undermines democracy when they don’t get their way, and threatens/enacts military intervention.

Please don't claim things, call names and make up your own conclusions if you don't know all the facts. Please either read it up in your "spare time" or the comments by others down below/above. And I might add, how selfish and insensitive of you to say "Maybe they deserve this" all the while not knowing all the true facts. Me and my country and everyone in it don't deserve this and I would NEVER ever say that to anyone who are suffering from civil unrest (or any kind) or facing turmoil. And yet, ironic that you are on a fan site of someone who puts kindness above everything. Chaymie

Aung San Suu Kyi turned a blind eye to the Rohingya. For all her preaching about peace and freedom she did absolutely NOTHING when innocent people were being murdered on her watch. That is a fact. Yes, she was ineffective during the crisis but you say "on her watch" so easily when you have no idea how the military regime works in Myanmar. She was never in full control, full power, it's not like the country is all for hers to commend. The very position of hers is at the pleasure of the military. But to condemn the entire country and its people as whole that we "maybe deserve this" is far too much. We do not deserve this civil unrest and the turmoil caused by the military aggravated by the same military. What have I, for example, have done to be called that I "maybe deserve this"? gabeoz 7,915
This makes me so sad I was just talking to a friend a few hours ago about the situation in Myanmar not realizing thr coup was actually happening while i told them about the situation with the new elected gov and the military. Growing up my grandparents sponsored Christian refugees for immigration because of religious genocide by the military. They were snuck out the country in the middle of the night by helicopter and many didn’t make it. My grandparents supported several families, helping them get housing, a job, furniture, food and even helping the children sign up for school and sending the adults to college to make a future for themselves. Unfortunately they face a lot of discrimination here in the states but are determined to make the best of it. I knew most of them that they helped (I know my grandma still talks to them even though it’s been close to a decade) and they’re all amazing people who were under the control of an incredibly oppressive government. I wish nothing but the best for the people of the country
