Hipgnosis Songs Fund, Primary Wave, and other firms are on a shopping spree for high-profile music catalogs, snapping up publishing rights from songwriters ranging from Bob Dylan to Stevie Nicks.
Diane Warren, who’s been writing songs for 37 years, from Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” to Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart,” says she has no intention of selling her songs to anyone.

'It would be like selling my soul, and that’s not for sale'

Warren does understand why other writers are selling.
“I get it,” she says. “I mean, times are hard. And if you need the money, publishing is so valuable. Truly one of the most valuable assets, I guess, in the world is a great song. But yeah, I’m not interested in selling.”

Maybe they know they won’t be around forever and want their catalog in good hands before they have no say

Maybe they want more money and that is perfectly reasonable

can someone explain this to me? how can she 'sell' those songs if she is not the singer/sole writer/publisher/etc.?

would she be selling her 'shares' of the song? (like the residuals that she collects would go to the buyer?)

Warren has her own publishing company, Realsongs, which handles all of her material.

Money, they can earn more now.
The rise in streaming has led to music catalogs increasing in value. And Biden wants to lift capital gains tax rate for any songwriter selling a catalog for more than $1 million from 20 percent to 37 percent.

I feel like as of right now, she can hold on to them. When she passes away in the far future, i think it would be nice to sell them or at least leave the rights to her publishing company so future movies or commercials can use them. You know, keep them moving and possibly upload them on digital formats or any digital platform that will be popular in the future.

Her songs are iconic and can describe a generation. Her songs were some of my mom's favorite.

Maybe to do with age? IDK. Maybe they don't want their estate to be in charge of it all.
