Japan PM is determined to hold Olympics as a symbol of human victory

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, despite growing uncertainty as Covid cases rise at home, renewed his determination Friday to host the postponed Tokyo Olympics this summer as a symbol of human victory over the pandemic.

“We are holding the Olympics and Paralympics this summer,” Suga said. “I am determined to achieve the games as a proof of human victory against the pandemic, a symbol of global solidarity and to give hope and courage around the world.”
“We must learn lessons from this pandemic and be prepared for future crises,” he said. 

The Olympic Games will be held in Japan from the 23rd of July to the 8th of August this year.

Just give Japan the 2028 Olympics. It sucks that this slot didn’t work out for them, but it’s just not safe to bring thousands of people from all over the world for a sporting event.

This 100% is about the money first and foremost. I really do feel for the athletes who work hard and dedicate their lives to their craft. This is not for human victory that’s for sure lol

To be honest, if there is a country that will 100% make sure the Olympics is safe and following CDC guidelines, I trust Japan to be THE country to do it. 

I suppose if they only do all the outdoor sports and only athletes will be there and coaches with no audiences, then it should be fine. If that is the case, it is no different than movies and sets continuing to film.  

And if athletes dont want to participate then thats fine too. Let Japan lose money because few will participate.

What’s the point in risking it? I understand it’s a tradition, but it’s a SPORTING event. It’s entertainment/a spectacle. Japan following CDC guidelines still puts countless lives at risk and could throw countries off of their course and reintroduce the virus to populations. Events that can’t be done virtually should be cancelled. Lives are more important.

You're going to have people flying in from all over the place..the risk is too high for something non-essential.

They could just have them in 2022 and move all other upcoming Olympic dates by 2 years. Just adjust the age limits for the categories for one occasion and that's it.

The fact that it’s going ahead even though it’s a bad idea from a public health standpoint means you haven’t learned lessons from this pandemic
