Portugal which currently has the highest rate of infections per capita in the world with 16,000 cases daily despite only 10 Million people (equivalent to USA getting over 500,000 cases a day) has closed its border with Spain and prohobited outflows from the Country

 

Portugal got hit unusually hard in part because it has close ties and lots of travel movement with all 3 Countries with major new variants (Brazil, UK and South Africa) which made Portugal get hit with all 3 new varients quickly

 

The picture below was taken as 39 Ambulances and fire trucks were in a line with patients for a hospital in Lisbon where some patients had to stay in for up to 15 hours

My aunt who is terminal with cancer wont even go to hospital and is suffering at home cuz hospitals are so caotic (in addition to not allowing visitors)

Yup. And with that, covid will be claiming the lives of people who weren't even infected. Anyone who needs urgent care in this areas is basically S.O.L.

Yeah. I already know so many ppl even here in Canada (and were not hit as badly as many places) who are having longer wait times for medical stuff unrelated to Covid

 

In fact i cant see my phychiatrist right now cuz they are flooded with ppl with suicidal thoughts right now from Covid Depression

Yes it's bad.

I live in Faro (a relatively small city), next to the hospital. Since the new confinement started 2 weeks ago, I've been hearing 4-5 helicopters a day to pick up urgent care patients and take them to Lisbon. 

Before, I'd hear a helicopter maybe twice a month. 

The worst thing about it is that people have become desensitized, and defend negationist theories more and more. The far-right is using this unrest to rise in numbers, using the same strategies Trump, Bolsonaro, and other populist assholes have used before. Some nights I can't even sleep thinking that even after Covid is over, there might not be a nice country to get back to anymore.

It's a mess.

This is devastating. As someone who's been to Portugal before and loves the country and its culture and language immensely, I feel so horrible for them.

My thoughts go out to the country, and I pray it gets better soon...
