It's here in the UK too, this one and the South African are the ones that we need to be worried about - there is good evidence to indicate both strains are vaccine resistant... The only solution right now is to contain the spread whilst the vaccines are updated... but it really does look we'll be playing a game of Cat and Mouse with covid for a long, long time. Vaccines appear to still be effective From my understanding of it a lot of mutations can happen without impacting immune response as long as the mutations dont happen in a portion of the genome the immune system was taught to recognize and fight and as long as what they call the "key" or whatever of the virus doesnt change either I only have a superficial understanding of it maybe someone else can explain in more detail But the basic gist of it is that tbe majority of mutations wont ever be an issue... but theres specific genomes or functions of the virus that cant change, if those change the vaccine will need to be tweeked and updated Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

We may even have had weaker virus variants in terms of transmissibility already that simply didnt last and never took off in big numbers and we never even became aware of them Of course the more transmissible a variant is the more likely it is to become among the dominant variants. Thats kind of a given In theory most mutations in anything are more likely to make the living thing weaker (i know viruses arent technically considered alive but same principal applies) than stronger because for something to function it requires specific complex coding so random changes usually screw with it in a negative way not positive. Its like if u took a complex computer program and started changing number codings at random... odds are you would screw up the program not make it better Cells and viruses are same idea... most mutations are bad for them not good. Its just that viruses when they have a mutation that makes them weaker most of the time that variant wont last.
