Good news to be seen as equal in the eyes of the law and repealing a fascist E.O....but then again, that's a military law we're now equal under...eek!

A great resource as to why radicals are not for LGBTQ+ inclusion in institutions such as: marriage, the military industrial complex, and the prison industrial complex is "Against Equality: Queer Revolution, Not Mere Inclusion."  It critiques the neoliberal idea of assimilation to the norm for the said minority group.

From the website: "'Equality' is a concept inextricably linked to positive social progress, but as the authors collected here suggest, it’s a concept that often functions as a smoke screen to hide a world riddled with systemic injustice. Take marriage, for instance: is the right to marry whomever we want really a worthy goal for the queer community? What if this perceived “right” is actually a wrong? Against Equality suggests that seeking inclusion in a system that’s based on institutional and economic exploitation is an unacceptable path forward."

(I'd also say it's key to have a discussion about equality vs. equity but this isn't the thread for that lol).

I 1000% agree that there are huge issues within the military and I often don't support how our government utilizes our military. But I do believe that, in our current reality, anyone that wants to pursue that life path should be able to without discrimination. This action addresses just one issue among many, but it's an incremental win, and I think it's okay to celebrate even tiny victories after the horror of the last 4 years.

With that said, I hope the Biden administration prioritizes more impactful action towards trans equality bc this is not so much a step forward as a return to the status quo before Trump.

Literally article I linked above was about a desk job militarily guy raping and killing a woman outside of a US base in Japan lol

i recommend everyone read about anti imperialism

For a huge win I personally don’t know a single trans person that was happy or overjoyed about this, many were critical, so idk if I would call it a huge win when trans woman are overwhelmingly homeless and under the threat of violence daily. It’s lip service/symbolic at best.

The military is (before acceptable, during the ban, and now after) literally the largest employer of trans Americans by far....

Y'all are truly tripping right now. We can hold more than one thought in our heads at a time. Hate the US military all you want, and yes your criticisms are valid, but don't say this isn't a win for trans rights.

Military service is often the only way for trans people to escape toxic, transphobic small towns and families. That's why trans people are 5x more likely to join the military than cis people. Sure the military isn't a perfect home, we all know how much reform it needs. But it's a right that shouldn't be denied, and who the hell are you to judge them for making that choice.

I just personally never consider having more diverse drone bomb pilots and people to shoot 8 year old middle eastern kids in the head as a win

I would never judge someone who makes a choice like that out of financial needs or whatever circumstances, but I will never celebrate the military and will always stand in solidarity with anti imperialists, trans and otherwise, who also see this as nothing to celebrate.

Lmao ok I'm done with this conversation but it is ABSOLUTELY SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE

It's like you're not reading a single word I write. You remind me of me when I was a hyper-idealistic leftist 16 y/o.

Okay no need for personal attacks like calling me sixteen over a difference of opinion. Sorry I don’t love the US war machine. There are plenty of people I know and interact with who are late twenties to early forties that are also anti-imperialists and were critical of this.

Like i’m not stopping you or anyone else celebrating it, I just don’t see it as a positive thing.

If you are capable of holding two or more thoughts in your head at the same time, there is no reason not celebrate this as a huge win.

The US military is the largest employer of trans people in the country and, probably, the world.

Transgender Americans step up to serve 5x more than cisgender people.

The military/VA is a HUGE healthcare provider and student loaner to trans Americans.

OBVIOUSLY there's lots wrong with it.... but that's beside the point.

None of this is commendable to me. You don’t have to imply i’m unable to have two thoughts at a time. It’s great they provide healthcare and tuition, but it is a tragedy that trans people need to sell their souls to imperialism in order to receive that.

I’m not stupid, I’m just 100% against imperialism.

A corrupt and morally evil organization being the most diverse employer is not a win, it is evidence of how identity politics has completely failed.

ily GagaSine sorry for coming across as rude!

Your argument would be more cogent if you tried to seperate your opinion from fact. But I'm peacing bc I need sleep and I'm becoming more curt by the minute :selena:

Spoiler

I already got 3 cold waffles for defending you earlier today :selena: :selena: :selena:

Like sure it's a tragedy in your eyes, but trans people who chose to serve don't necessarily feel that way themselves. My colleague and longtime friend is a trans woman and served in the marine corp (closeted at the time) and certainly doesn't feel that way.

The world isn't black and white. Just because you think the military is bad doesn't mean they can't do good things. This is a good thing.

I’m sorry but I will never agree that the military is good and if you don’t think it’s evil and corrupt (see the article I posted about the military choosing to cover up the murder and rape of one of their own, this is not an isolated incident but rather a regular occurrence)  then we are simply operating on different understandings of morality and will probably never agree.

Also don’t worry I got plenty of waffles for that too :spin: I don’t think you actually did anything to break the rules tho, maybe you should try contesting it? There is like a support area on here.

Anyway it is a fact that there is wide spread corruption in the military, it is a fact that it facilitates rape and murder, it is a fact that servicemen kill children and face no consequences for it, and that US imperialism has resulted in untold misery and death as well as caused further conflicts and political unrest globally.  Not sure what you mean by separating facts or opinions, unless you think murdering civilians being morally wrong is an opinion.

Gagas lil monster

While this is amazing it is deeply disturbing that there was a law opposing this in the first place. Especially since so many people try to claim that America is a fair place that's all for equality

Did you go to the capitol to keep Gaga safe from another insurgency. Nope, the military did.
