This is aimed at those who are working. Work is essential at the moment and a lot don't include full sick pay. Id rather the cleaner or warehouse worker take unpaid sick leave and get £500 than feel forced to go to work just to put food on the table.

they should be heavy limitations to it, not a blanket £500 for everyone who tests positive

There will be limitations just like the current one in place, this is in response to 83% of people not testing due to fear of not being able to work and provide for themselves and/or family.

The articles say that in the current form it would be for everyone testing positive. It should be only people working and earning a certain amount

Any time the government offers some benefit theres always going to be those individuals that abuse it and try and take advantage. But if the government didnt wanna offer benefits everytime there was a risk someone would abuse it they would never be able to offer anything

 

Secondly, im 100% certain the number of people who go into work sick when theres no benefit and the corona that is spreading far outnumbers any odd individuals here and there that would seek to get corona on purpose just for a paid vacation

 

On a net basis u still get more positive effect than negative

I am still heavily against this measure because it will lead to even more cases which is not needed. What the Government needs to do is punishing those with huge fines if they don’t self isolate.

Yeah, this. People aren't getting tested even if they show symptoms because they know a positive test means they're out of work until they test negative. Which increases the likelihood that someone is carrying and spreading it.

By providing this cash buffer, people don't have to worry about losing a paycheck or two.

I don't see how this is a bad idea  a few idiots might try to catch it but loads more people will actually get tested and actually quarantine. The ones that purposefully catch it will also quarantine.

Well i strongly disagree with u there. I really do not believe those who would intentionally seek to get virus just to get some free pay out vacation would come anywhere near those who are sick and go into work anyway trying not to loose pay

 

Countries that offered little to no assistance are doing worse in general while countries like here in Canada that offered lots of support have done way better

 

Naturally theres countless other variables at play so its hard to prove anecdotally. But its still more to go on than simply accusing that ppl will purposely seek to get infected just to get cash

If someone who is sick hides it and goes to work anyway to avoid loosing pay (a coworker of my dad got caught doing that cuz he makes a lot and for him government support pay is like half his salary) they can cause a workplace outbreak that sometimes infects dozens of people

 

So even if the number of ppl seeking to purposely get it was just as high as the ones hiding it, the support still helps because the spread is so much higher for sick workers that go in than someone infecting themselves

 

I dont think theres any logic to ur opinion unless u genuinely think such a huge portion of the population would be that desperate for a paid vacation that they would purposely want to get a dangerous virus just to get it

 

I dont know of anyone here in Canada doing that

I just don’t believe rewarding people who test positive for COVID to encourage is the right way to go. I think personally slapping those of fail to self isolate should be slapped with a massive fine, essentially punished, not bribed and rewarded saying “well done on catching the virus”

Omg, the amount of people in this thread saying "It's all about testing" and "Who would want to catch a deadly virus" yes a deadly virus they can be cured from. If people were so scared about the virus then why would people still be breaking rules? It's half obvious that people are gonna abuse this, but again there is always one person who's opinion has to be different to be right
