I've also seen some arguments that, due to the penal system's blatant bias against racial minorities, restricting their right to vote could arguably violate the 15th amendment.

I heavily disagree, what about those people that were killed by the murderers.. they don’t get a vote anymore. It is wrong to think these sick sick individuals could potentially change an election.

Only 3% of people in prison are murderers  49% are incarcerated on drug crimes due to the nonsense "war on drugs". Then there's traffic incidents and assault which isn't great but still not worth losing your constitutional right to vote.

The racial bias can't be understated either. Black people are 5 times as likely to be convicted after a trial and they serve 20% longer sentences than white people do on average for the same crimes. Black jurors have a more difficult time getting into a court room so you'll often see black defendants face a jury that's nothing but white faces. Black people also make up a disproportionate chunk of the prison population (34% black and 29% white compared to the general population, 12% black and 60% white). Stopping prisoners from voting disenfranchises black voices. We had a whole movement about restoring the voting rights of over 1 million felons here in Florida just to give these people their voices back.

Finally, consider this, there's currently about 500,000 people in jail who've not even gone to trial or been convicted yet. Is it fair that they lose their rights if they're being held when election day rolls around just because they can't afford bail? That's disenfranchising poor voices 

It's just another way to suppress votes imho. Sure, don't allow felons to vote until they've served their time but everyone else should be allowed to keep that right - even behind bars.

It just nerves me the wrong way thinking those of committed crimes should get a say in an election. It’s not about voter suppression for me. I am a heavily democratic person. I am not fully aware of the US prison system and not fully aware of the drug laws in the US. I am taking you at your word and the prison system does need reformed (here in Scotland as well). I just don’t think it is right for those who broke serious laws should get a say.
