Maybe a little off topic but I just attended a funeral (on zoom) from a Brazilian man my family knew for a very long time. He wasn't born there but lived there most of his life and even spoke Portuguese in the Brazilian accent indistinguishable from Brazilian born people

I'm sorry for your lost. Was it cause of covid? Because here in Brazil things are really serious. The worst situation is occurring in my city in Manaus, where all the oxygen tanks had ended and people were dying because of suffication

I'm curious about the composition of the population tbh.! I heard Canada is allowing tons of immigration because it wants to reach like 60 million people by 2050 I think. Idk if that is a feasible goal but it would be interessting. I always thought Canada was too huge to be so sparsly populated...that said most of the population is along the American border in the south of Canada. I think the government should try and encourage immigrant communities to reside and settle in Northern regions as well a bit more. That way new cities and communities can be built a bit more dispersed in this huge country. I know immigrants tend to go to big cities at first for jobs and to find others from the same background but I think the government should find a way to create more jobs in the North and give incentives for people to move north tbh. It still feels like a frontier of sorts that still needs exploration and development.

Climate change can make that happen. We all know the north is full of ice and it's mostly cold there. That's why no one lives there and you can't really get through it without destroying the woods. Climate Change can help that (because it will be warmer in the winter) but destroying the woods would made Climate Change grow even faster.

Thanks. Although in recent years I hadn't seen him half as much as in the past and weren't as close to him as we once we're but even so, he left a mark and will be missed

And no not covid. He died of Cancer and was 80 years old

I don't see climate change making the north much more hospitable any time in the foreseeable future

Even if Earth warms up by 3C which is way more than target goals, and even with the North Pole warming up faster than the planet as a whole so let's say 5C to 6C... Winters will still be cold as F*CK up there not to mention the unpleasant and depressing extremely long nights in winter won't change...

In short, global warming or not, it's not gonna be a place that will be particularly hospitable

But even if the weather did improve more than that... It still brings me back to my original point... What is the purpose of wanting to populate the north when we are not even remotely close to running out of space down here? Populating a region just for the sake of it seems kinda pointless to me. It's just gonna be expensive and an economic burden for no reason :enigma:

Also in Brazil there is the largest japanese community outside of japan in the world

Biggest japanese colony, biggest german colony, second biggest italian colony. Not to mention the amount of slaves that is by far 5 times bigger than the whole USA, even though we can't know for sure from which countries people came from.

I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

Yes, Global Warming doesn't necessarily makes all the places warmer, it mostly makes temperature harshers, winters colder and summers hotter.

Why populate a wild area? Isn't it better to conservate the nature in these places? Why take people to places where they can't grow their own food? Logistically it seems stupid to me. Let nature take care of these places.

I have to say: I don't understand the concept of "race" for USA/CANADA. Like "asian" is a race, so they put indians, japanese and armenians under the same label even though it makes totally no sense, but armenians are too "white" so they are considered white, but they come from Asia (I was discussing if Kim Kardasian is white with a friend before), Iranians are considered white to census, but they aren't treated as whites by americans.

Latinos/Hispanics are considered a "race", but you an be descendant of europeans, black folks, native folks. The colonizer descendent is treated the same way as the indigenous/slave descendent.

I am mixed race, as most latin folks, but I think I pass as "white", the german girlfriend of one of my best friends told me that I looked like an european spanish guy (she was actually quite shocked when we met, she wasn't expecting someone so white). I am "white passing", but my grandfather is black mixed with indingenous.

This whole "race concept" makes no sense. If you go to Europe they don't consider slavs as white people (the name slave comes from slav).

Every place you go has a different concept of race and it rarely considers the ancestrality of the person.

This makes Brazil one of the most multi ethnic countries in the world, giving us a really rich culture
