A lawyer for Jake Angeli, 33, who also goes by the name Jacob Chansley or QAnon Shaman, said during his initial court appearance on Monday that he was refusing to eat while behind bars because of his strict organic diet. Arizona Magistrate Judge Deborah Fine ordered US Marshals to work with his attorney to resolve the issue — which they did by agreeing to serve him organic food, a local ABC affiliate reported. “We will abide by the judge’s order,” a US Marshal told the local television station, adding that they’d provide him food that meets his high dietary restrictions. Now his mother has told reporters outside the courthouse that her son hasn’t eaten anything in jail. She says it’s because he hasn’t been provided non-organic food, The Arizona Republic says. Chansley is from Phoenix, and surrendered himself to the FBI over the weekend. His surrender came after authorities shared pictures of rioters they were looking for. He was presented in his first federal court hearing on Monday. “He gets very sick if he doesn’t eat organic food,” his mother is quoted as saying by the newspaper. His public defender told the judge that Chansley had not eaten since being taken into custody. They said he is on an extremely restrictive diet, possibly for religious reasons. Judge Deborah Fine called this “extremely concerning”, and told the public defendant to work with the U.S. Marshal’s Office to sort it. David Gonzales is the U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona, told ABC15 that they will “abide by the judge’s order,” and provide food as requested. Ms Chansley has also been defending her son’s involvement in the riot at the Capitol. In an interview with ABC-15 she said, “It takes a lot of courage to be a patriot, OK, and to stand up for what it is that you believe.” Meanwhile, Chansley told NBC News he doesn’t believe he did anything wrong: “I walked through an open door, dude.” He went viral on social media after pictures of him were taken standing bare-chested in the Senate chamber, wearing horns and fur, and his face painted with the colours of the US flag. In one photo he is holding a spear. Chansley was charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with violent entry and disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds. He describes himself as a QAnon digital warrior, a shaman, an ordained minister, a published author, a former YouTube personality and a Trump supporter. According to court documents Chansley told the FBI he came to Washington “as a part of a group effort, with other ‘patriots’ from Arizona, at the request of the President that all ‘patriots’ come to D.C. on January 6, 2021”.
