Guest
I would rather them pander to the working class and make music and music videos that I can relate to, or at least picture myself in a similar scenario of the visuals and lyrical content. Songs and music videos about a rich lifestyle are tired and they have both done before. Perhaps I am misunderstanding their point.

As long as you chose to follow the pop culture you can't really complain because you created this monster of wealthy people that likes to brag about it and the fans likes to cheer them up about it. We do it too with every fave that post a new shirt or necklace, so there's nothing wrong with what Drake and Bieber did. Time to admit it: celebrities don't care about us, they care about the money, every move is for money, wake up from your fantasy. Ziggy 11,865
The writer isn’t saying it’s evil to be rich, but they’re saying that among the pantheon of celebrities, these ones are fakers. They specifically mention the Joan Baez’s and Springsteen’s of the world who are actually putting their money where their mouth is *unlike* these folk who sit rich, pander to broke folk, and do nothing else. It’s a worthwhile thing to bring up if we’re all in on this “age of authenticity” from celebrities. They’re the exact opposite of that and in a pandemic that becomes especially glaring. Calling something out and proposing and argument doesn’t mean you’re obsessing over it lmao this person is a culture writer. It’s their job to think like this. StrawberryBlond 14,873
I don't think they should be preaching to us but I don't see anything wrong with simply filming a video in their mansions. Where else are they going to be if they're stuck at home and that is their home? Just as it's bad to shame the poor, you shouldn't shame the rich just for being rich. I guess I don't get the whole jealousy thing for wanting that life to the point where you're bitter about anyone who does achieve it. Being satisfied with what you can realistically achieve makes you so much happier. I thought the article was going to be along the lines of criticising rich singers portraying characters who are poor and/or with working class professions in their music videos. Justin did that with his videos for Holy and Anyone recently (Anyone seemed to take a leaf out of Maroon 5's book when they did the whole boxer storyline for One More Night). What gets me is that these songs don't call for this storyline or imagery. It's like they're pandering to the little guy by trying to be relatable even though we know they're anything but. Time to admit it: celebrities don't care about us, they care about the money, every move is for money, wake up from your fantasy. That might be true for some celebrities, I don't know, I don't follow the pop culture side of things. I follow Gaga for what she does outside of music, entertainment, products and endorsements. I follow her for what will be her most enduring and most important legacy ... helping people. She will live on within the lives of the people she has helped, the people she has made kinder, braver, stronger, and the people who's lives she has saved. And she will live on within the lives of the descendants of all those people, generation to generation long after her music, awards, chart achievements, products, and wealth are all forgotten. Gaga is her own gift to the world, just by being herself and leading by example. I live outside the space time continuum.
Schwerk 7,246
As long as they pay everyone that works for them a fair wage and treat them with respect I don't really see the issue. Part of being an artist is showing a fantasy, so I don't feel showing of your home in a video is that tone deaf. Especially if an artist does humanitarian work. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch
freebit 6,240
I think it all depends on how much self-awareness the person has. For example, the people in the Imagine video had zero. Ellen had zero (I remember her getting dragged for pretending life was so boring in her mansion even before everyone found out about the work place drama). They look at us, and obviously, we worked hard for where we’re at, so it’s like we can’t feel bad for the things that we have.” However, I will say the wording of this quote is a little annoying . Everybody works hard. I worked 10 hours of OT last week at my main job, plus 8 hours at my second job, where's my mansion? It's just me being a little extra though, truth be told he doesn't have to hide his wealth, and he did work hard (though not necessarily more than anybody else, it's just the nature of his job to generate high revenue when you're popular).
