Are you? :billie:

Yeah dude i’m recommending that you look into learning about imperialism and the American regime and you’re recommending I watch & read movies and comics (which by the way I readily consumed already as a child so I am very aware of what the actual values are, and they aren’t as pure as you think)  that were made to entertain children.

So you want me to look into your point of view, but aren't willing to look at mine? Great way to entertain a debate...I already know about American imperialism, trust me, I've learned about it in school and I've done my own research, just like I guess you've done yours when you "already consumed" the media as a child.

And if you actually took the time to read and comprehend my statements beforehand, I've told you that comics and these particular movies do have a political undertone. I'm not denying that. What I'm saying that we disagree on how those political undertones are being presented and interpretted. I don't think these movies are "pure," but I think that the way you're presenting them is unfair.

Well I think we have nothing further to discuss them, i’m not going to watch marvel movies to understand your viewpoint when the actual plot of most of these movies could fit on a thimble and their values & messages are exceedingly clear and simple. When a character in a movie says “I am a good guy” that doesn’t mean it’s true.

I’m not assuming, I was genuinely asking and yet you still didn’t answer?

personally I have zero anger or resentment at Chris Evans, like I said I don’t care about him at all. He was decent in Knives Out and I like the movie Sunshine. But it is a fact he promotes the US military both personally and with his film career. That’s all.

I think crafting a political identify is on on-going process... I don't pretend to know everything (I certainly don't) but I do my best.

Right now? Democratic Socialist/Labour supporter...

Marrying a fake movie, an actor taking pictures with fans to what's happening in DC is the epitome of YouTube, Twitter crap conspiracy news.

The fact that people here might be entertaining the idea of a connection is appalling.

Vaush is awesome. He’s such a meme lord, but I love him. There’s a certain part of the left and leftist YouTube that is pretty unhinged and they’re probably just grifters, but Vaush is very pragmatic. He’s great at making leftist politics make sense.

But... if what you're spouting is true (to me it all sounds a bit conspiratorial), then why not take umbrage with Disney? Marvel? The people pulling the strings here? Chris is just an actor... the man (to his credit) has been very vocal on his political stance for a good few years, he's an ally... attacking him feels redundant.

And furthermore... Twitter lambasting people like this just feels SO tone-deaf given what's actually going on right now. Honestly, antics like these are partially to blame for people being pushed into eating up far-right rhetoric. I'm about as far left as you can get, but the "woke brigade" are very much a thing...

As opposed to attacking the people at the heart of the problem, we're going to go and complain about Chris f*cking Evans.

Give me a break. Please.

You seem to think we're canceling Chris Evans or something, or saying he is personally responsible for the imperialist undertones in superhero movies... which is very much not the case :laughga: it's just very ironic how he talked about things "enabling" this violence, when "Captain America" whom he plays is a perfect example of something that enables a certain idea. People pointed this out, and everyone who felt uncomfortable by it accused those people of attacking him. I don't even know what break you are asking for... how have you been burdened by someone drawing parallels between superhero movies and imperialist notions?

The way y'all are blaming superhero movies for inciting violence at the United States Capitol is beyond insane.

This is like blaming videogames, music, TV shows, etc. for causing violence. Plenty of people have seen these movies and aren't Trump supporters or have taken part in these disgusting riots. You take it upon these terrorists who have hateful points of view and project themselves onto ****ing superhero movies, not actors who are getting paid to wear a spandex suit :billie:

You're taking things to extremes and then projecting it onto this elusive "y'all." No one has blamed superhero movies for terrorists invading the Capitol. It's such a simplistic and black and white way of looking at things, that doesn't exist in the real world. There are nuances everywhere, that contribute in small or big ways to something. This is what Chris is talking about, that many things "enable" certain actions. The obvious imperialistic undertones in superhero movies - especially ones named "Captain America" - have to play into the identity of a white supremacist. It doesn't mean it "caused" it, it doesn't mean everyone who watches is going to catch those undertones or have it affect their identity or mentality. It just means it's an enabler, what he said. There is no need for such defensiveness, no one is attacking you if you like superhero movies.

... and just fyi, let's not discredit comic books are a legitimate creative medium.

I am literally a comic book artist as a hobby and hopefully one day as a career. There are plenty of incredible comics that tell mature, nuanced stories and are great prices of art. Mainstream superhero comics are not that (and I am not saying they have no value, but there is clearly a difference between something like Persepolis or Maus and captain marvel issue #117 or whatever, even the working conditions of the artists and writers are completely different. One is pumping out a product as efficiently as possible to get as many people to buy it, the other’s intention is to share their story and art).
