Because the Republican Party uses evangelical leaders as political tools to control their supporters. They’ll do anything if church leaders twist it as “what would god want us to do”. It’s been a Republican ploy for about 50 years now that came to fruition when GOP leaders realized they were losing relevancy as the country approached the 21st century.
