A hospital in Northern California quickly vaccinated 850 people after a freezer that was holding the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines failed, prompting officials to do an emergency distribution of the vaccines before they spoiled.

An outageĀ left the refrigerator at the Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Medical Center in Mendocino County without power.Ā  By the time hospital officials realized the freezer had malfunctioned, they had 2.5 hours to distribute the vaccines.Ā

The hospital sent 200 doses to Mendocino County Public Health that were dispensed to county workers, including sheriff's deputies and jail staff. Jail inmates also received the vaccine.Ā  Ā Nursing homes receivedĀ 80 vaccines.

The rest were distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis after the hospital sent out a social media blast to recruit medical personnel to staff four makeshift clinics and another blast telling employees that anyone who showed up could get a shot.Ā

All individuals who were vaccinated received vaccination cards and will be contacted for their second dose in 28 days,

I always wondered what they would do in a situation like this actually

Ā

Cuz there are the priority groups that are supposed to get it first and ur not following procedure to give to others... But at the same time... It's literally an ethical crime to let them go to waste so better give them to anyone that will take them than let them spoil

Is there something bad about inmates getting the vaccine? They were probably trying to find anyone to take the doses

the only reason i’d agree to it would be to protect staff ofc but some of these people are in jail for a reason. there’s some BAD people in jail.

What does that have anything to do with it? They are in jail not death row. I see no reason to deny them healthcare just like we don't deny them basics like clothing, food and showersĀ

Ā

Now I wouldn't exactly put them on a priority list but this is a special circumstance. They needed to find ppl to give the doses to or they'd spoil. Better to give to a non priority group than let them go to waste

Doesn't mean they don't deserve to be vaccinated for a virus??? The way the pandemic spreads in jails is horrifying and they deserve the vaccine just like everyone else tfĀ

Jail inmates have rights too. There’s no reason to let these vaccines go to waste. I understand there are bad people in jail but there are also people who may not deserve to be in jail there too. The justice system is flawed and even the bad ones deserve the same rights.
Ā

These people likely would have gotten the vaccine eventually anyway

It's not just killers in there, people also go to jail for robbing a bank, breaking into houses, scamming, drug dealing, identity theft, money laundering, tax evasion etc etcĀ

I'd agree if they were all serial killers on death row but a lot of the people in jail are there for far less serious crimes and don't deserve to have human rights stripped away. It's not like they were prioritised over the vulnerable either, it was to stop them going to waste.
