JRCF29 8,168
Best Album by a New Artist 3. The Grammy snub not enough people are talking about, Conan Gray burst onto the pop music scene from nowhere (okay, Youtube), and his debut effort nabbed a top-5 open- not to mention a shoutout from Sir Elton John. The upbeat kiss-off "Maniac" and the devastatingly relatable "Heather" went viral on Tik Tok and made a minor impact on pop radio, but if his output continues to be both club-friendly and cry-yourself-to-sleep-worthy and as authentic, inspired, and original as his first LP suggests, he will be a mainstay in the indie-mainstream sweet spot for years to come. 5. Her happiest album since maybe ever, Miranda Lambert's 'Wildcard' features sharp wit ("Way Too Pretty For Prison"), passionate love songs ("Locomotive"), and one of Mom's favorite maxims ("It All Comes Out in the Wash"), basked in the glow of sunny country chords and boosted by Lambert's award-winning vocals. 4. Queen of Americana Brandy Clark returns with her third studio effort, a mix of songs penned by Clark but previously recorded by other artists such as the nostalgic "Bad Car", and brand-new tracks exploring love, loss, and occasionally this crazy thing called life. Through 11 songs, Clark tackles bittersweet breakups ("Your Life Is A Record"), does a spot of introspection ("Who You Thought I Was"), and pleads for a clean slate ("Can We Be Strangers"). Always underrated, Clark doesn't let the lack of mainstream attention stop her from pouring her heart, soul, and made-for-country voice into everything she does. 3. From child star to rebellious teen to soft country crooner and now to legit rock star, Miley Cyrus has dabbled in many different sectors of the music industry, but its the latter that she feels most at home in. Boasting collabs by the badass rock n roller Joan Jett, British rock god Billy Idol, contemporary pop princess Dua Lipa, and newly-minted Tik Tok star Stevie Nicks, "Plastic Hearts" is the most cohesive LP ever to have come out of the "Wrecking Ball" singer's repertoire. Whether it's a self-deprecating ballad about not being anywhere near good enough for "Angels Like You", a disco rocker tailor-made for solo trips to a slightly-seedy nighclub after a breakup ("Midnight Sky"), or the sticky, sultry "Bad Karma" alongside Jett, each track seems to fit like a glove. 2. While 2020's state of lockdown did no favors for this danceable collection of glittery club fare, 'Future Nostalgia' has been impossible to escape this year. While we may not have much nostalgia 20 years from now for the pandemic year, we will look back fondly on the cheeky, sexy, Grease-alluding "Physical" and the ode to falling into a love you worry will eventually crash and burn that is "Break My Heart". High-budget music videos and a virtual concert brought the album to life, but it was only the cherry on top of the best pure pop album of the year. Her boyfriend may have her feeling like she could fly, but we're the ones that were left "Levitating" after just one listen through. 1. The planet of Chromatica is Lady Gaga's dance floor (she fought for), and her EDM bona fides are on full display across its sprawling landscape. The best collaboration of her career, "Rain on Me", served as the keep-your-chin-up anthem that 2020 needed, and her and Grande brought out the absolute best in each other. "Stupid Love" showed that Mother Monster is capable of elevating even the simplest of bass drops, while "911" took us inside a mind at war with itself via robotic vocals polished by spotless production. "Fun Tonight" merges pop with dark house beats, creating the sad banger of the year, and album closer "Babylon" provides further proof of Gaga's wordplaying abilities while evoking images of high fashion at exclusive Brooklyn Nights.mp3 clubs. Much like the album appearing before it on this list, the pandemic did its best to snuff out the pink light of LG6, but even Miss Rona can't stop electro-pop perfection.
