Why did G.U.Y. flop?

I mean the song itself is EDM-perfection with playful lyrics and it's really catchy. In my opinion it was even the safest single choice (next to Venus) for the GP.

But why did it "flop"? The video was iconic as well and really well made.

Was it the lack of promotion? The DWUW scandal? or just the overall ARTPOP situation?

Spoiler

..anyways stream the good sis and bring it to 100M views. :flutter:

It was only monsters that thought it was amazing lol GP would've heard it and thought 'wtf'. A bit like Replay... GP taste is not the same as liddo taste

Stare at the Chartster in the mirror they talk to me too. #StreamFunTonight

Timing mainly. ARTPOP era was put on hold between Christmas 2013 and like February 2014 so there wasn’t much going on and people moved on. Add on top of that all the controversy of the era.

It’s indeed a shame since it’s one of her best video’s. Also very admirable how Gaga paid for the video all by herself.

I love the song, but:

  • unapproachably weird metaphorical lyrics
  • overly long, self-indulgent video
  • ARTPOP was already over

Weak chorus + bad reputation + no promo

I don't think DWUW's “““scandal””” had anything to do with it, it didn't make much noise and everybody loved the song

It came out like 7 months after Applause, there wasn’t that much promo either, she was overexposed/hated

I didn't really like G.U.Y. I loved the video tho.

exactly this
all objective reasons

maybe it's a nice song to shake a gay's ass in the club, but how can GP relate to lyrics ''I wanna be the G.U.Y. under you" :bear:

Did you think I'd show up in a limousine? No

GP wasn't ready (and still isn't, I guess) to comprehend the value of ARTPOP.

sounds familiar
