MeetinDaShadow 224
I love Ghibli, but couldn’t watch the full trailer! Why did they move from the traditional hand drawn look to a more 3D computer generated look? Reminds me of TooToo Boy on YouTube. Not looking good. Shipper 13,002
Honestly what I didn't like was the Kacey Musgrave BGM. It sounds very garage band music. Edit: I will definitely watch the Japanese version. Even the songs are different. The Japanese version had a more Ghibli-like BGM. 💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕📦💕

Well, Ghibli is obviously looking to increase their profits in Western markets. 3 hours ago, Ziggy said: I mean, not to poke a hole in your well-intentioned point, but if they don’t like the work anyway I don’t think they’ll care much if those movies continue to come out or not You're overestimating the impact of loyal costumers in Ghibli's overall market reach. Only diehard Ghibli fans will skip this movie over some idiotic tradition-based argument. Casual viewers will still watch the movie and judge it for its quality and entertainment value. Not more than that personally, I’d say I’m somewhere between casual and fan of ghibli’s work, and this animation is, frankly, a bit hard on the eyes. It looks rough. There are better 3D animation movies out there (Soul, for instance, is gorgeous). I don’t think it’s solely an argument about tradition. It might be getting framed that way, but 2D is an entirely different animated art form from 3D. It’s about preference more than progress. but in this particular case, for me at least, the issue is with the quality of said animation. When you have a studio known for absolutely stunning 2D animation drop a trailer with so-so 3D animation, I think it’s only normal to feel a bit deflated lol
RAMROD 108,173
If you guys are unhappy about the animation style, don't worry, you are not the only one. It is almost universal reaction. As for the director, Goro Yamazaki, have said this in his defense; "I was the only one among the people at Ghibli who knows that method of creation, so I was able to push the project forward without consulting with anyone. Hayao Miyazaki, (Goro's dad), told me to go ahead with it, and producer Toshio Suzuki encouraged me, saying that it seemed like a fine idea, but after that, I was left to my own devices. I was basically abandoned, so I made the anime with a young staff and didn't consult with the old guys at all." If Hayao approves of it, I guess we can only wait how the final product will look like in full

I understand 2D and 3D creation require vastly different sets of knowledge, but GP preference has already been set and 3D animation wins. That's why not many big studios (and by that I mean almost none) create 2D movies anymore, especially after Disney and the excellent idea of releasing their latest 2D film during the same weekend as the last Harry Potter movie, plus Pixar's overall influence, which to me marked the end of marketable, big-budget, blockbuster 2D films. Today indie films and low-budget ones are all that is left. And yes, the 3D animation here may seem rough but I think that part of it is Ghibli trying to replicate the charm of 2D animation and actual inexperience that may decrease once they are more accostumed to producing these kinda films Former First Lady of the United States.
