I still don't understand where your confusion lies about the $600. Its not in addition to anything unless you're on unemployment.

No I get the $600 part itself I just thought there was more to the stimulus which it seems there is (The $300 EI enhancement)

So my last comment was more refering to why u don't think it's enough. So I was asking if ur refering to the underemployed (employed but less hours) cuz I'm assuming those are the ones not getting covered by any plan?

No need to get jumpy like that :enigma:

It is sufficient for me because I am fortunate enough to not be impacted financially by the pandemic. However for people who are not so fortunate and have low paying jobs, $600 is barely enough to get by.

Ok so u were talking about ppl not covered by EI but still affected and there's no program for those partially but not fully effected

That's literally all I was trying to figure out if that's what u were saying

Meanwhile other countries have been giving money every month

despicable

I don't know the plans of most other countries but in my country it's really not all that different either

We got small 1 time bonuses on 2 occasions but it wasn't even for everyone, only seniors and parents with children. The bonus for seniors was $300 and for parents was $200 per child

Other than that most relief has also been in the form of unemployment benefits but slightly more generous than the typical standard EI

Were not throwing money around every month for everyone either. Ppl like me who haven't lost job don't even get a small 1 time bonus at all whereas if I'm understanding correctly in the US even the employed will get this (or is it just some people?) But either way it's not like we're getting anymore

I think a temporary basic income (even if they don't wanna make it permanent) might be the simplest thing right now cuz it's hard to account for every individual situation with other programs

Wait what?! So when people in the US become unemployed or have to take time off work due to Covid-19 they didn't receive any support? Thats messed up.

That's my point. The $600 is just a bonus the main benefit is the enhanced EI. So I don't get why the $600 is looked down so much on

Or is it cuz most ppl don't qualify for EI?

What is EI?

The $600 is what Americans are going to be impacted with. My parents and I, we work at different companies, had days almost every week, where we got sent home without pay due to something related to Corona. Thankfully, my parents are a couple, so they're able to make ends meet, very tightly. I, on the other hand, fell in a loop where I'm having to borrow from my upcoming check so I don't fall behind on bills.

Now there's other families that have young kids, or small businesses with employees that, are falling extremely behind. $600 is ridiculous. It won't even help me that much.

The $300 unemployment only helps those who are, well unemployed. With everything that is going on, it's very hard to get into the unemployment list. My brother tried to get on the list since he had been laid off, applied, and he was told it be weeks till he gets notified or not. Guess what? Bills don't stop. He was able to talk to talk to his employer and accepted a $2 decrease, schedule move, in order to keep his job and not go unemployed.

So in essence, the $600 is the most important part and why so many Americans are upset.

Oh EI stands for employment insurance. That's what we call it in Canada I just assumed you guys called it the same

And yeah I suspect that's a very common problem. Ppl earning less but not fully unemployed so they don't qualify for the standard unemployment benefits

Same happened here in Canada. In the end they did a new program called CERB to include more ppl ($500 a week) cuz too many ppl just didn't qualify for the regular EI

But even that didn't account for every situation. I lost my job in early February right before covid shutdowns (but not related to covid the timing was a coincidence) and I only got 11 weeks of benefits because unemployment was at a 40 year low in my region when I lost my job

Literally within 2 weeks of my loosing my job everything started slowing down cuz of Covid and then by March we were in a full lockdown :rip:

The fact that unemployment surged didn't matter. The number of weeks your entitled to is determined at the time you loose your job and claim benefits and the fact that the economy shut down right after doesn't change that... And to top it off since my job loss had nothing to do with Covid-19 I didn't qualify for that $500/week CERB benefit either

Long story short I had to scramble to find anything cuz I was in debt on top of that. Fortunately I got lucky and I did find a job that pays decently (more than my old one) right before my EI benefits expired :duck:
