If the Government had acted sooner, like banning all travel, then people wouldn't have had the opportunity to "escape". But on the other hand, you have the ignorant people who disobey the rules like these people who fled to the Alps. And if people behave like that, then the UK Government should have taken that opportunity away from them before they had a chance to go elsewhere. I fully blame the government as much as I blame the ignorant, selfish people who do stupid stuff like the people in the article I agree both were to blame but in my opinion the government's had a bigger excuse for their mistakes We've had lots of scares over the years including Ebola outbreaks, H1N1, Sars and whatever else I'm not remembering. Every so often threats come about. We don't go into full lockdowns everytime these happen, the economy couldn't handle if every few years we had to do full lockdowns everytime there was a false alarm I'm sure if the Governments around the world had known this time it was gonna be this bad like the Spanish Flue back in 1918 most probably would indeed have acted sooner. There is a certain degree of unknown they can at least be excused for But people that a full year after we have evidence after evidence of how dangerous it is don't have the same excuse the government had of being caught off guard. They know it's dangerous and still choose to act irresponsibly anyway The governments not acting sooner was indeed a mistake, but if ppl took it more seriously and respected the lockdowns and social distancing measures once they did go into effect instead of worrying about personal rights and convinience, we still would of been able to have a better handle on this even if we were indeed later than than we should of been Let's also further add to the fact that those who don't take it seriously at all many never did... If we did the lockdowns earlier by a month or two there's no reason to believe they would have reacted any different. If they didn't take it seriously when the danger became obvious they probably wouldn't have when their country only had like 10 confirmed cases tbh That's why even tho there's blame to go on both sides I still put a bigger chunk of the blame on ppl who refuse to listen to anything. They don't have an excuse or lack of evidence. They literally just don't care. Even when the government did go full force they just still did not cooperate

They don't have an excuse or lack of evidence. They literally just don't care. Even when the government did go full force they just still did not cooperate The reason why we didn't go into lockdowns for Swine Flu is because covid-19 is far more infectious and far more deadly than different flu strains. Influenza is a coronavirus, but we haven't seen anything like Covid-19 before. Covid-19 is very different to flu (and other flu strains), and is also different to the SARS outbreak. So not only is it new, but it is highly infectious and is also deadly. A bad flu you can easily recover from... however, Covid-19 is a different story. And the chapters in this story keep evolving and changing. This new variant from the UK is even MORE effective at transmitting itself, and is more harmful in the younger generation. We have no clue if the vaccines will still work, they need to do more testing on it although they believe it should still work. Locking it down completely will disable the spread of the virus. Therefore, it's the governments responsibility to make sure they protect their country from a harmful virus like covid-19. In the UK, the SAGE committee, which provide the government with data and advice, said that the UK should have locked down in the middle of December. Failing that, there should have been a full lockdown over Christmas with no relaxation of the rules. Boris Johnson ignored that advice in order to "save Christmas". Now because of his arrogance and stupidity, this new variant has gone global. It is totally irresponsible. If the Government did what it was supposed to do, all travel would be banned and this new variant would not have had the opportunity to spread itself this far. When people break the rules, it is completely wrong and some blame should be put on them. However, if government isn't tough on the rules and its handling of a pandemic for a highly infectious and deadly virus, then you have a situation in which the governments have allowed the virus to spread. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. However, when dealing with a situation like the one we all face, you have to force that horse to drink... otherwise we'll get nowhere and the lockdowns will drag on and on. Not to mention, by dragging it on and by giving the virus room to infect, you consequently allow the virus to grow and mutate into other strains which can lead to something more dangerous (and potentially more deadly) than the first few strains we were all dealing with, which is a huge problem. We are already seeing signs of that with this new variant. Governments make the rules and its their job to protect their people. The blame should go towards the governments first, and secondly to anyone who breaks the rules. End Racism Now

All of that is true about infection but we didn't know these details to the same extent we do know now back in January and February. I don't think it's fair to expect the governments to fully know how to handle an unknown situation at the time And I agree u gotta enforce it hard but good luck getting anyone to accept that. Many would instantly accuse government of oppression and taking away their basic rights

Quit grouping all Americans into one category. Some Americans are notorious for being annoying tourists in other countries. That is a fact. Same with Brits. I don’t hate myself. I hate other annoying Americans. They ARE annoying, dumb, and insufferable. Just accept it and don’t try to defend the indefensible because you have some national pride that won’t let you be critical of other Americans. What I don’t accept, is coming to a website, where I can escape that mentality, and still be grouped into a category by self loathing Americans who are nothing like the people they are so against. And yes, I’m proud of my country- particularly the people that are progressive- I chose to let them represent who I am. I’m not going to group myself in a category with 50 percent of the population that doesn’t represent me or my values. A population of over 300 million people can be lumped into different categories(progressive, liberal, conservative, Christian, etc)- it is innacurate to pick one of these categories of people and let them represent “America”. And as much as I do that for my country, I do it for other countries. You will never see me on another thread saying “oh that’s typical Brits” or oh “that’s Canada for you”- that mentality is inaccurate and ignorant. The same standards I hold for myself I hold for others too. And everyone should do that here, and they don’t.
