Is China really that socialist/communist if they have the most billionaires in the world tho?

Ppl often use that to describe their authoritarian government. The government also has a lot of state owned and state controlled enterprises which is something that a communist or at least very socialist society would typically have

But their economy overall is not that socialist or communist despite heavy government control in specific sectors or companies and is quite Capitalist

So refering to them as socialist or even communist in my view has always been misleading and inaccurate

There's not many Countries in recent history that are true definitions of communism. Most just have traits or a few aspects of it. Cuba is one of the few I can think of that is actually communist

No, that's my point. I hate how everything gets falsely called communist. True communism has never been achieved, and socialism is more rare than you think, or often badly applied.

The west, or at least the US has been brainwashed into thinking it's Capitalist US vs Communist China... But it really is Capitalist US vs Capitalist China. Both are the same system done differently.

A real communist society would not let such things happen, because anti-exploitation is literally a core caracteristic, whereas in capitalism, exploitation is basically a requirement.

Exactly... it’s just a name from the 70s and before where it was more accurate. All this fear mongering about socialism and communism yet in context, it’s at worst describing traditional American™️ Social Democratic ideas. So embarrassing. If real socialism and communism comes, no one will be able to identify it 👀

Let's be real: America played itself. The level of incompetence and unprofessionalism was embarrassing and the Chinese were probably laughing the whole time.

Let’s be real, you’re forgetting about Europe’s mishandling as well.  Culturally, Americans and most people in western nations want the government out of their business, while people of China are born with a sense of control from the government. Controlling a virus in that environment is much easier than in countries where the people don’t want government control.

A communist country will always have better control of epidemics. Intentional or not, it showed the downside to lack of government Interference. With that being said, USA and countless other counties could have handled things much better and much sooner.

Also, slowing down the huge Consumerist economy of the USA does not help the Chinese economy as they supply the US consumerists with lots of products. China coil very well overtake the US economy, as been expected for quite a while now- but it has a very fragile government. We will see if China can hold itself together.

A very socialist Nation that is properly run and efficient and thriving would be the ultimate human achievement tbh

Unfortunately in my view Governments and people have proven time and time again they are not competent enough to run a system with that much central control

It's not that central control in itself is bad or doomed to fail. It's that I don't think any government is competent enough to pull it off well

That's why I favour communism tbh. I think it's often inefficient to elect representatives. The US can barely get Bernie to lead, yet isn't a signficant part of the population pro-welfare and such policies? People end up voting for Biden who does not represent their interests in the slightest because of strategy, not because they actually want what he's proposing bar few exceptions. Not to mention the blatant corruption of this system. Maybe direct democracy can get messy, but at least the will of the people would actually prime.

But I do think a government, even with all its flaws, is better at running things than corporations, who are running everything right now (wages, the economy in general, and even elections through corruption).

It's pretty obvious that capitalism is a failure. Just because we have it good doesn't mean it's working. 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck... that's basically the entire lower and middle class. Not to mention the modern slavery that goes on in the third world (which the west is mostly responsible for; these sweatshops are ran by our corporations) and the people dying of hunger (despite the US alone being able to feed those people 4 times over with food waste).

I think it's weird that socialism is held to such a higher standard compared to capitalism. We have one clearly failing system, and even if socialism has flaws, it really shouldn't be worse if implemented correctly, right? Cuba is doing great in many regards including education and doctors per capita, and their shitty economy can largely be attributed to trade sanctions by the US. I don't know what we're so afraid of.

I don't know who told you China was communist but that was a big fat lie. China is state capitalist. If you hate China (as you should), blame capitalism and authoritharianism.

Ok I'll bite. What is your take on how international trade should be run on a fully communist or socialist society?

I'm not well versed enough to have an opinion yet. Still figuring out my ideal society countrywise before seeing the worldwide aspect.

Honestly, I think its a bit scary China is becoming the next super power. They have one of the WORST human rights record on the planet. If you think the the USA is bad, China is even worse. And no, this is not racist or xenophobic but its true. You should see what they are doing to the Muslims, minorities, Tibet, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Its scary living in a world with no freedom.

I completely agree. Not to mention it is obscenely overpopulated and the biggest polluter in the world.

We are in a world economic thread tho, in which you wish a communist or socialist country ascends to power. So why make a comment like that?

Not to mention Trump pulling out if some pretty major transnational trade agreements.

I’m no supporter or neoliberal trade agreements, but in reality, instead of making America stronger, Trump isolated the country from having any influence or leverage in terms of trade around the pacific. America will lose the game of Capitalism and will inevitably have to play on China’s terms in the future if we continue down this path.

Actually I was saying the exact opposite by efficiency problems. Companies run by the government have a tendency to have cost overruns, unnecessary over staffing and tend to require more resources than a private company to accomplish the same tasks. That is not good for productivity or to have a thriving economy

The private sector has a lot of flaws but due to the drive of profit and financial gains they scrutinize efficiency and take a much harder look at what's necessary for operations than State Enterprises tend to do. That's why companies like Canada Post or Tap airline in Portugal despite essentially having a large monopoly still managed to always loose money and need to be subsidized by tax payers.

If the government ran every company and decided how to allocate resources in just about everything basic on current track records it would be a disaster

That's why I'm saying for heavy socialism or even communism to work you need a government that is efficient and competent...

If you can get that, then you have the economic efficiencies of capitalism without the downsides of exploitation, abuse and inequality. But governments would need to get better at resource management cuz as a general rule they've tended to always suck at that

If the superpowers of the world become communist, the rest of the world is gonna follow through, which is what I'm hoping for.
