As a person on the spectrum, what offends me most isn’t the fact that Maddie plays an autistic person instead of an actual person with autism; it’s the fact that she collaborated with fυckιng Autism Speaks. :saladga:

For the uninitiated please see below why they’re such a “lovely” organisation:

This. The lack of appropriate and adequate research for the film is concerning. Watching the trailer shocked me.

Serial Chiller

Y’all just say you’ll do better next time why she feels the need to lay out all this tearjerking Maddie thing.

Why does this sound so cringeworthy :madge:

I’m just imagining it going down in the most disrespectful way, and I’m going to hell because the idea of it sends me 💀 As I grew up my ticks went away, but as a kid I would do some pretty awkward ****. The vision of Sia mimicking those insensitively is hilarious to me

Did she even apologize to the girl she called a bad actor without even knowing?

I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

REALITY

I don’t have a problem with Maddie doing research or even Maddie at all, but giving the role to her 2+ years ago and she still had the audacity to say “maybe you’re just not a good actor” to an autistic actor who spoke out about it, which to me relates in that she didn’t even look for other talent and instead just gave Maddie a new project. She didn’t want an autistic actor, but only someone to act like one? Idk... just thoughts lol.

I understand. It’s a complicated issue, but I personally just don’t see anything wrong with it. Of course, Hollywood needs to diversify which actors get work. Autistic actors need more work, same with Black, Asian, Latino, Native American, LGBTQ, Muslim, Jewish, etc. actors. That said, it’s also an actor’s job to play someone they’re not.

Like, are people gonna cancel Forrest Gump next? What about straight actors playing LGBTQ roles? Should we cancel them too? I just think it leads to a slippery slope of which actors can play which roles. Like, autistic actors need more work, but they also shouldn’t be confined to only playing autistic roles. Same with LGBTQ actors and other minority actors.

Didn't mention it in the article but I would take that more of a sincere gesture than this interview. Sounds like she's only looking out for her image

Sia stop it just apologize for the Tweets!

Anyway I'm not still upset with her about this, but I respect those that are no longer supporting her.

I mean the movie seems to be a really long Sia music video with her protégé

I believe it's sad she didn't really try to look for another actress who would understand the complexity of being an autistic person

Exactly. There’s tons and tons of profesional autistic actors.

Can you name one that is literally mute?

Or are we supposed to think that getting anyone autistic would be fine despite the huge differences in level of disability?

I’m having trouble wrapping my head around if their are mute actors, or if people think all autistic people represent each other.

Part of me was like “this b*tch always wanna argue with me” when you first quoted me lmao but you always bring thoughtful responses and they’re never hostile :diane: you’re my debate partner mwah lmao

And yeah I agree acting is acting to an extent, I actually really love Cloud Atlas and their concepts & creativity despite all the backlash for that lmao :flop:
