Better doesn‘t mean good, our population is way smaller so the effects are not as intense as in the US but the government still fumbled it quite a bit. Just a few weeks ago they were doing eviction hearings in Toronto over zoom and so many people got evicted or were told to pay thousands and thousands of dollars within a short period of time in order to not be evicted... lots of people are suffering.

At least the government gave people a decent amount of emergency money but they could have done so much better, like introducing a rent freeze. There was also a scandal regarding private nursing homes where people where taken care of very poorly and proper precautions were not made at all.

Well those are other issues, and no country is perfect.

But going by the numbers, Canada is still doing much much better than the US.

Absolutely, I never denied that we are doing better, just not by that much. I just think ppl focus too much on Canada doing ‘much better’ than the US than the actual issues and failures going on.

I troll gagadaily daily but never really post or even thought I would come across anyone or anything specific to our frigid boring city. Hopefully if we go into lockdown again you’re all stocked up on essentials and things to keep you occupied. Ive read certain articles that are considering allowing specifically Ottawa (which would apply to me) under a 14 day restriction as well as northern Ontario, but I doubt it honestly.

But what's even a full lockdown? Because here restaurants, gyms have been closed since October 11 in red zones and now non-essential businesses are closing Dec 25 till Jan 11 and there's mandatory work from home that started jan 17 for people that work in offices and don't need to be in person.

My parents have bumped up our Christmas dinner to the 22nd because my Mom is worried about this -- we're only 4 people getting together (parents + me and husband) but that wouldn't be allowed under lockdown rules. Other than that the only thing about our life that will change is going to the gym 2X week for my husband, so bring it on I guess

I was in stage 4 lockdown a few months ago - had to stay within 5kms of my house, curfew at 9pm, mandatory fitted masks everywhere, max one hour of exercise outside, permit required to prove you're an essential worker, no home visitors, essential industry workforces reduced, only one person per household allowed to do shopping a day, no citizens returning from overseas allowed into the state etc. It was one of the longest and harshest lockdowns in the world but it paid off - we eliminated the virus. Stay safe everyone.

Even after having clear proof that lockdowns actually do work and save lives 

So Far the lockdowns here in Toronto and Peel which have been in effect for a month now haven't stopped cases from rising higher and higher

 

Tbh I think lockdowns worked better during first wave when more people actually followed the rules

 

But now with pandemic fatigue ppl don't give a sh*t anymore and just have a f*CK it attitude and do whatever they wanna do. People keep getting caught having house parties, people go to private people for haircuts people don't even bother to seal and put masks on properly, they just slap it on so they can go where they need to go since it's mandatory... Almost all my coworkers admit they have plans to gather with family for Christmas even tho the government specifically asked everyone to only celebrate with their own household this year

 

Lockdowns CAN work when you have a population that co-operates. Much of Canada's population is not co-operating anymore and the lockdowns aren't having much of an effect anymore like they did before tbh

 

Literally in first wave the lockdowns got my Provinces cases to under 200 a day... Now we've been 2000 to 3000 a day (10X to 15X the rate of first wave) and Nationally 6000 a day

 

Again new restrictions haven't done squat to the trends and it's cuz ppl don't care.

By Full in the title I meant that it applies to the Entire Province I wasn't talking about the severity of the lockdown

 

Cities like Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Hamilton and I believe Ottawa and Winsor as well (not sure about the last 2 I mentioned but I think they were) are in the red zone and have been for a while so we're already in lockdown

 

What the Province is doing is moving the entire province to red zone. So the restrictions already in Toronto for example will apply to the whole Province. But if your already in the red zone like me, nothing changes, it will simply be extended

Well in per capita terms we still did way better so it's not the size of the population that can be blamed

 

I'm more annoyed with the lax attitudes of everyone than anything tbh. If everyone took it seriously this would be over by now

 

I was so tempted to go outside my quarantine zone in Brampton to Orangeville for a haircut where the lockdowns weren't in effect like some people I know did. But I decided to just do a covid cut at home because it would be irresponsible to live in a covid hot spot and break the rules and go get services in cities not in lockdown but many people have no issue doing that

 

The Government shares some blame in that respect. They should of known people would do stuff like that so you can't close some zones and not others. People just cross border and do shopping and dinning out and haircuts in another city. They put too much trust in people and rely too much on people to take personal responsibility seriously. They should know by now a big chunk of the population has proven they won't bother and so they need to crack down harder it's the only way

 

This entitled culture of "my rights" and "my freedoms" which take precedence over safety and concern for others health is why we can't get out of this mess tbh
