With a grifter like Trump, I think there is always some element of delusion. You read about these guys who pose as a priest collecting money to build a hospital or some such. Yes, they are criminals trying to steal money, but there is a part of them that is convinced that they're doing nothing wrong. The same guy will spend a few years in jail and then pop up somewhere posing as a doctor or a solicitor. They are not just straightforward bad guys, there is a problem with the wiring. It's probably part of the reason why so many people believe in Trump. He has covinced himself that he isn't lying, and that helps him to comvince others.
