"It's predictable in a sense we can have a good idea from one year to the next how bad it will be. It's unpredictable in terms of when the peak is going to be," Miller said of the flu season. "Sometimes, it's delayed until January or February before you really start to see an increase."

The good thing, both Miller and Roberts said, is that measures taken to stop the spread of the coronavirus may do an even better job of halting the flu, which is less contagious than COVID-19.

In fact, the measures being taken to suppress COVID-19 may dictate when the flu season peaks, Miller said.

If a COVID-19 vaccine becomes more widely available in February or March and people start gathering again, Miller said flu cases could rise shortly thereafter. The state stops tracking flu cases and hospitalizations by mid-May, when the season is considered finished.

"Sometimes it smolders along for a while before it takes off," Miller said of the flu. "How big it is will really depend on people's behavior at the time it's ready to take off."

For months, health officials have warned that if flu cases weren't kept low this year, it could lead to a "twindemic," which would be a flu pandemic alongside the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

A "twindemic" could overwhelm hospitals even more than COVID-19 already has, experts have warned. It's a fear that doctors still worry could come to fruition or could at the very least lead to a later-than-usual surge of the flu, Roberts said. 

"We could see a peak in March or April. We've seen it before," Roberts said. "Anything is possible and that's why you should make sure you have all the different layers of protection."
