It's a bit unreasonable to expect someone to just know their gender.

We still live in a world where image dictates someone's perception of gender. Sam is very male presenting and someone who doesn't follow Sam's life wouldn't know their pronouns automatically. That's incredibly unfair to expect that from someone so removed from Sam. 

Should we cancel Shawn and say he's problematic? Absolutely not.

Should we start asking people what their pronouns are? Yes. But we are unfortunately a ways away from that as a society, as a whole. I would like this to happen. But it won't be for a long time despite the small steps towards progress.

I respect everyone’s choice, but we live in a world now where things like this are pretty new to all of us. All this, non-binary stuff has got me literally all confused on what people actually want to be, and it gets so far that people come up with the strangest thing. 

I honestly can see why he did make a mistake, he should apologize privately and not publicly. 

If I see a person, I can literally not use the word “it”, to call it by that. It sounds offensive somehow

Actually most of us use they/them or other gender-neutral pronouns.

The thing is that you don’t have to understand what us want. We present a choice for you to respect our pronouns, which signals back whether we should pay the respect toward you. Cause you know, respect is a two way street.

Yes I agree. It’s difficult for Shawn to get Sam’s pronoun correctly assume that he knows nothing about them. But it’s worthy to consider that Shawn is actually under public’s eyes. A little more research would  help avoid this situation. Regardless, it’s a simple mistake which can be fixed easily.

While Shawn probably didn't do this on purpose, a lot of the shots taken at Sam for coming out and expressing their gender identity have been on purpose and it's frickin' gross. If you don't care for Sam's music, you still have to respect their identity. Some members truly show their hypocrisy when threads involve their "non faves".

Educating others and supporting polite pronoun corrections will do a world of good to support our NB friends.
