I think it was simply a mistake. It IS possible to be forgetful about it. Besides not everyone keeps track of everyones pronouns. I wouldn't even know about Sam's identity if it wasn't for GGD

Honestly, I get both arguments here. Misgendering someone can be very disrespectful, basically denying the person's identity but it can also be an honest mistake and people need time to adjust to it. What I don't understand is a bunch of people lmaoing every post critical of midgendering. You can disagree with someone but don't be a cünt about it.

Most of us have used he/she all of our lives. It's beyond rout for us to use those two pronouns. Of course, no one misgenders on purpose. But Sam Smith was a he when they got famous. And for years after. It takes time to remember that they's changed how they wants to be IDed.

OT a bit: I had a friend change his name from Ben to Parker. It took me a good two years to remember to always call him the latter. Parker was always gracious when I forgot. As he should! He changed the game - I was happy to comply of course, but compliance doesn't happen overnight. I'm sure Sam has common sense and will think of this as no big deal. Because it isn't.

Some people know, not everyone. Sam Smith isn't actually a priority for most people, it's not going to be the first thing everyone automatically thinks of and remembers. Especially such a relatively new, socially invented concept... And like it or not, you can't force anyone to understand or agree with it either.

Yeah a lot of people do know but not everyone, and even the people who saw it didn't necessarily care enough or pay attention to remember every time... Even the Sam Smith defenders here slip up constantly, because it is normal to refer to someone as a sex - he/she and not they, it's the way it has been forever until very recently. So no wonder other people do also... You can't change the game and dictate that others follow suit as and when you/they decide it's time, especially when it concerns a subjective social issue like this, no matter how strongly you feel about it.
