Can people just recognise the simple difference between 'deliberate misgendering' and 'accidental neglect'. Which one does Shawn seem like? You're saying he was aware that Sam wanted to be referred to with the pronoun 'they/them' but deliberately went against their wishes?

Or is it more plausible to surmise that Shawn had temporarily not thought of that issue because maybe it wasn't in his mind a lot. It does not mean that he is homo/trans-phobic or anything. It was just a slip of tongue. Shawn does not seem to be a very disrespectful person and there really is no reason to show why would offend the LGBT community deliberately like this.

If we're not gonna agree that there's a difference between intentionally using incorrect pronouns to disrespect someone, and unintentionally using someone's past pronouns, then there's no use going back and forth. I believe Shawn should apologize publicly in order to normalize apologizing for getting someone's pronouns wrong or forgetting them. But to actually demonize people for not thinking Shawn is a monster for doing this?

It's the responsibility of the event organizer  to detail out and know every circumstances of the participants. They should've also disseminated the information - if they did researched about it.

 

Also, I think Sam's party should've reminded them as well since NB pronounce is not yet well known to the public. Despite Sam's A-list status and media exposure, we all know how fast people forget.

as a trans female, getting misgendered was so common back in my pre-trans years. it does hurt, so i hope Sam is ok, as i’m sure it wasn’t intentional. 

shawn seems super mature, so why are we dragging him over a minor hiccup? if he pulls a kevin hart thats when we should pull him up for it. we have to keep in mind most heterosexual people aren’t as educated about non-binary identities and the community overall.

it’s not about “they should know” etc. they don’t. that’s the reality of it. let’s instead educate people instead of dragging/cancelling them over a mistake. this is why we are losing potential allies.
