Lab-grown meat to go on sale for first time

Cultured meat, produced in bioreactors without the slaughter of an animal, has been approved for sale by a regulatory authority for the first time. The development has been hailed as a landmark moment across the meat industry.

The “chicken bites”, produced by the US company Eat Just, have passed a safety review by the Singapore Food Agency and the approval could open the door to a future when all meat is produced without the killing of livestock, the company said.

Dozens of firms are developing cultivated chicken, beef and pork, with a view to slashing the impact of industrial livestock production on the climate and nature crises, as well as providing cleaner, drug-free and cruelty-free meat. Currently, about 130 million chickens are slaughtered every day for meat, and 4 million pigs. By weight, 60% of the mammals on earth are livestock, 36% are humans and only 4% are wild.

The cells for Eat Just’s product are grown in a 1,200-litre bioreactor and then combined with plant-based ingredients. 

The cells used to start the process came from a cell bank and did not require the slaughter of a chicken because cells can be taken from biopsies of live animals.

idk anything about how this is grown, but hopefully it is sustainable and its consumption becomes normal in the future, animal agriculture is a big problem we should not ignore it

I'm not sure about this. Im a flexitarian, and I eat plant based most of the time, with exception eating real chicken from time to time but the thought of a lab grown meat kinda turns me off and sounds unhealthy. I know what ur gonna say, equally unhealthy to eat meat, except that with meat you have irons, proteins things that sustain you and is difficult to replace with something else unless you are an expert or seek the advice of a nutrionist.

any future where we can let animals just have happy lives and reduce the number of domestic livestock (and therefore deforestation and land use AND methane output) is one I cannot wait to see!

Good thing I am transitioning from pescatarian to plant-based / vegan very soon. You should see "What the Health" on Netflix and just avoid eating **** like this.

Anything that reduces the suffering of animals is a good thing in my eyes. I will probably try this out when it becomes widely available. I am pesc at the moment and I do enjoy some meat substitutes but mainly try to eat more vegetables in my meals.
