It’s pretty ironic for people with the most mild forms of autism imaginable complain about not being offered a role of someone with severe autism.

It’s not the same thing babes, it’s exactly what you are accusing Sia of doing :emma:

THIS SO MUCH. Unfortunately, a lot of severely autistic people aren't capable of filming a block buster movie, but, their stories STILL do deserve to be told. Awareness is so important, and I think Maddy and Sia have put a LOT of thought into how to tell enlighten people in the kindest and most compassionate way possible.

I do feel bad for her. She talked about how she literally sent it to the leading autism specialists to view her movie and see if there was anything incorrect or offensive. They gave her the green light.

Sia is such a kind hearted person, and ya, maybe she could have had an autistic person do the main role, BUT, she cast her close friend/daughter as the main actor because she knew how compassionate Maddy was as well.

It's just sad because she's trying to tell a story, and it's getting shut down before people have listened to it. By shutting stuff like this down, these stories DON'T get told, which is extremely sad.

I dunno genuinely see why people might be disappointed that she didn't cast an actual autistic person, but I don't want to see Sia attacked for this. She's so kind.

a few woke warriors on twitter isn’t getting shut down. her inability to stop tweeting and making it worse is what is truly going to turn people away.

Well if we stop the "yaasss queen! drag ha to the pits of hell!!" attiude especially on twitter, perhaps artists will try not tweet those rude things to get yass'ed. But yeah, her answer was just plain rude.

“Maybe you’re just a bad actor” is completely unprofessional regardless of her other tweets :air: imagine the Oscars response to lack of diversity “maybe they’re just bad actors”

True! But I do feel compassion towards her, because her tweeting is a direct result of HOW much love and compassion has gone into this project, and I think she is genuinely hurt that people are assuming she is being hurtful. And when people are hurt, they can be illogical.

But yes, I do agree. She needs to take the day off Twitter and work through those emotions with friends and family.

Because trans, black, disabled, etc. people are always at a disadvantage and they have much less opportunities. When movies are made to supposedly empower them and show a "good" image of them, you'd except said movies to practically empower them by giving them the opportunities they lack. Instead they hire people who do not fit the role and who can get cast in 500 other movies and so they take away such opportunities from people who need them.

What's wrong is not trans, gay, black, Asian, and people with disabilities not playing those exact roles. The problem is them not getting roles at all. THAT is what needs to change. We don't need trans actors exclusively portraying trans characters, nor do we need trans characters being exclusively portrayed by trans actors. We need ALL types of actors playing ALL types of roles.

I mean she can defend and everything but it doesn't matter, the "maybe you're  a bad actor" shouldn't have been said and she could actually start with explaining the thing about her movie.. it's simple..

Sometimes it's not just screaming "damn these SJW" but actually understanding the situation and that maybe... they actually have a point here and Sia basically acted bad and mocked an autistic actor, it's simple as that.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

I think people are just looking for reasons to be offended about, just like every Twitter thing. This is just acting and I don't get why suddenly they want actual trans people to portray trans characters, gay people to portray gay characters and so on. I guess it wasn't the best way to respond to criticism but haven't read the whole thing or watched the movie yet, we'll see.

“Maybe you’re just a bad actor” is sooo cringey, unbecoming of Sia, rude, and disappointing. Digging her own grave.

Also, it’s not a new movement. Disadvantaged groups (gays, trans, POC, those on the spectrum, etc) have looooooong been discriminated against in film. And it’s shitty when they could do such a good job in those roles. We should give them the opportunity imo.

This do be making me feel better about the situation. Still, adults should handle themselves better on Twitter. Like, this is not your job. You have a publicist. You have a social media team probably. Just... stop digging your own grave and log off!

REALITY

As a huge Sia fan, it's definitely really sad to see that she had to respond in that kind of manner. Even if she disagreed with what the person was saying, she certainly could've gone about it in a different way.

I believe that Sia is a kind-hearted person though. Also, isn't Sia bipolar? So she should understand how sensitive it is to talk about mental health...

Also, before anyone makes any judgments about the film, I think it's important to view it first before deciding if it isn't "representative" enough.

The main character is based on her close friend, she is not  disabled but special abilities.
Sia also tweeted that "casting someone at her level of functioning was cruel, not kind, so I made the executive decision that we would do our best to lovingly represent the community. She found it extremely stressful and overwhelming."

Speaking carelessly Ms Thing!! Ok!! :deadbanana:
I love Sia but she is definitely in the wrong here. Responding to a fair criticism with a personal attack... kinda goes against her message
