Greece dramatically increases animal cruelty penalties to 10 years

The Greek parliament on Thursday voted unanimously to make serious animal abuse a crime that can lead to a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Until now, cruelty to animals had been a less severe offence in the eyes of the law, punishable by a mere fine.

According to a law voted Thursday, people who mistreat animals will also have to pay "a fine ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 euros." The minimum jail term will be one year.

Agriculture Minister Makis Voridis, who introduced the law, said it was “a strong message sent by parliament to society.”

Is what they deserve actually, animals can’t defend themselves so 10 years + is just the right amount of time, people need to understand that animal are not here for sport or for people to mistreat them whenever they want to  

I also dislike people that get a pet just for clout ( take pictures and upload them to social media then forget about them)

Dramatically as in the punishment was less harsh before and now it's way more years, not that is something bad. Everything you are saying is right.

Animal cruelty shouldn't even exist, as an animal lover it's something that really makes my blood boil.

to be honest should be more like 20 years and for life if the cruelty was on  a whole other level. basically the same punishment if it was a human being
