It would be cool if he brought out daft punk. But if he doesn’t I’d still say he can carry it himself!

He's literally the biggest male pop artist atm,

Exactly. Male pop artists amount to nothing next to female artists. That's like saying he's the best of the worst. That's not really an achievement.

While this is true to a certain extent, there are some exceptions... I'd say Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars or The Weeknd are good example of that. The Weeknd literally had the biggest pop era in a year where household names like Gaga, Katy and Ariana released as well - that apparently annoys some of you guys, but props to him tbh. He served and that's a fact, he deserves that gig.

In terms of performances I’d agree, but this year so many more male albums got billions of more streams than female ones

Please tell me about one instance where Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars have had visuals (whether it be looks, MVs, performances) or anything worth praise besides catchy songs. It's a bad sign when Justin had a shitty ass halftime show himself.

Commercial success isn't a good indicator in this day and age. The "it" factor no longer enters into the equation in the music world. Due to streaming, the success goes to basic songs you can put on repeat/study to/make Tik Toks with. The definition of Ariana's latest snooze and The Weeknd.

I'm not surprised he got the gig, it does make sense considering he's popular at the moment. But from an artistic standpoint? It's gonna be another underwhelming mess. But he's a male, so people will be happy with the bare minimum.

Which just shows the pop industry as we knew it is dead. We're not gonna know new iconic stars whose looks shape up decades no more. Before streaming, you needed the it factor to succeed. Nowadays it's all about who's the most digestible for the masses. Props to him for being the best in the depressingly uncompetitive male pop landscape, I guess.

Nothing against you, but saying JT or Bruno Mars can't hold their own next to pop females is a bit delusional.

And if you want to attack on an overall artistic viewpoint: The Weeknd's era was visually coherent and impeccable, going as far as winning the Video of the Year VMA. Sooo... yeah, I'm still not quite sure what some of you are on about.

I can’t wait for all the ones doubting him here to be clowned. He puts on great shows, you don’t need to have intense choreography and 10 outfit changes to be considered a good performer, something the gays here desperately need to know.

Also the constant dislike for male artists needs to stop. Maybe broaden your musical horizons a little bit.

They don't have memorable MVs or performances, so I'm very confident in saying that. Naturally the couple males who rise a bit above the bar (which is on the floor for male artists) are gonna be celebrated. But they could never reach the levels of female pop artists.

The industry is extremely uncompetitive right now, and any new act that exceeds the bare minimum reaches the top. Billie Eilish is an example. She does have a great artistic vision, but her songs are very bland and she could push herself way more if there was anyone to beat. But there isn't.

My point is the GP always has **** taste and values mediocrity whereas there are INCREDIBLE acts left in the shadows. It's not the case only in music, but for everything in culture. Popularity means nothing if it's not backed by chops, and the good but not impressive chops of the people we named are imo not enough to put them at the same level as female or past decades stars.

Maybe stop praising males for doing the bare minimum, and maybe then we'll get another Prince or Bowie?

Except The Weeknd is not one of those bare minimum males. It’s you who is too close minded to see it, you definitely already have your own perception of his artistry. He’s not a Prince but I wouldn’t call him a bare minimum either, that’s ridiculous.

Runway

I know he factually has better numbers than any artist this year but he doesn’t feel that big based in my experience. Harry Styles feels bigger and i hate him, probably because his fangirls are just so loud but idk. My guess is he will deliver a Bruno Mars-like halftime show in terms of reception  (which was acclaimed anyway) but then in 2022 a female performer (Ariana for example) will come and raise the bar yet again and make The weeknds performance just meh in retrospective

While you're making some valid points in your last paragraph, I wholeheartedly disagree with all the rest.

I think he could do just fine without another act, but like everyone else on the planet I would be pumped if he could get Daft Punk to pop up. That alone would garner his halftime show sooooo much press, no matter what else he does or doesn't do.
