Nemo 4,411
He's not "requesting" pardons (he's the granter of pardons); he's asking people's opinions on whether or not it would be legal for him to grant them. And, per the article, he's been doing that (asking) since 2017.

They aren’t referring to optics. More that the appearance of guilt could put him in legal trouble with NY state

Maybe, it may end up that he steps down and gets Pence to pardon him. In that case it'd only be the full force of state law, since there's precedent for Nixon. That being said, if he self-pardons & leaves office, it will probably be taken to the supreme court or just outright ignored & he gets charged anyway. I can't see Trump ever doing that. You are correct, you have to accept the pardon within court proceedings, which also means that you're accepting guilt and can be called to testify/spill about your accomplices. If you don't, you're committing a new crime Presumably pre-emptive pardons would never be able to cover every little nit-pick crimes he's committed, anyway. I'm sure there's even some he's not aware of, especially when it comes to financial ties/Tax violations. That being said, it would be tragic if the supreme court sided with Trump if he decided to just write a few one-liners like "all crime" or "breakage of any federal code" blah blah blah. I mean, imagine the optics of that. You could say he pardoned himself of ANYTHING. You could say that he pardoned himself of bank robbery or smuggling, it'd all be under that same umbrella. I can't see Trump ever doing that. Don’t necessarily need a trial but do need to admit guilt. But they’ll get round it by pardoning “any and all crimes that may or may not have ever been committed”
DelusionalGaga 29,717
Wait so he could pardon himself for crimes he has been not charged with yet and any other future crimes? Why would something like this even exist?
KORG 4,756
Idk about america but if one of our leaders did as little during s pandemic as trump did they would not only be fired but they would be charged with endangering lives also.
