This headline is frustrating. Incrementalism is frustrating. Doesnโ€™t the Pope saying this also alter the religious preconception that God is unchanging? If you think the Pope coming out in support of civil unions is going to be a death blow to homophobia you have another thing coming. Many homophobes are also anti-Pope and Protestant donโ€™t have much respect for him anyway.

It's not the same as full on same-sex marriage, but it's still definitely a step in the right direction.ย

it's what really matters imo because at the end of the day marriage is nothing but a catholic ceremony. recognizing the right of civil union is superiorย

I believe marriage offers some more rights than civil unions, though.

yeah, because the laws are heavily based on catholic church views, but I think civil union is superior because it'sย independent of the catholic influence.ย

Itโ€™s not like Iย gave a f*ck about what this pope said before this statement, so this doesnโ€™t do anything for me. I donโ€™t need the pope who represents a corrupt institution to tell me that my life is valid.ย

I understand where you're coming from, and I 100% agree. At the end of the day, no one, not even the pope, can try and validate my existence because my existence already validates who I am.

That said, this is definitely a step in the right direction for the LGBTQ community. Whileย youย may not need that kind of validation, perhaps other LGBTQ people need it. Perhaps their parents need it to make them feel more comfortable with the idea of being gay. A lot of people, especially in western cultures, don't really understand just how closed-minded other cultures can be when it comes to the LGBTQ community. I can already tell you that for people like my parents, who are staunchly Catholic, thisย mayย open their minds more to be more accepting.ย

Well, but marriage differs from country to country and from religion to religion.ย Matrimonyย is more representative of the Catholic view of marriage, as opposed to "marriage" in general. Still, this is a big step in the right direction.

You are very wrong about his opinions having no gravitas on peopleโ€™s lives.

For all the queer kids being raised in strictย Catholic homes, they just got a life line.ย

If the Pope can validate their sexualityย and future relationships like this, that will do loads to bring their family around.

The head of a church that boasts over a billion members just validated same sex relationships, after spending hundreds of years condemning them.

You and I may not care about his opinion, but if Pope Francis comes out in support of same-sex unions, itย will impact a lot of gay peopleโ€™s lives in a powerful way.

I should have said "should bare no gravitas".
