This headline is frustrating. Incrementalism is frustrating. Doesn’t the Pope saying this also alter the religious preconception that God is unchanging? If you think the Pope coming out in support of civil unions is going to be a death blow to homophobia you have another thing coming. Many homophobes are also anti-Pope and Protestant don’t have much respect for him anyway.

I believe marriage offers some more rights than civil unions, though.

yeah, because the laws are heavily based on catholic church views, but I think civil union is superior because it's independent of the catholic influence.

I understand where you're coming from, and I 100% agree. At the end of the day, no one, not even the pope, can try and validate my existence because my existence already validates who I am.

That said, this is definitely a step in the right direction for the LGBTQ community. While you may not need that kind of validation, perhaps other LGBTQ people need it. Perhaps their parents need it to make them feel more comfortable with the idea of being gay. A lot of people, especially in western cultures, don't really understand just how closed-minded other cultures can be when it comes to the LGBTQ community. I can already tell you that for people like my parents, who are staunchly Catholic, this may open their minds more to be more accepting.

Well, but marriage differs from country to country and from religion to religion. Matrimony is more representative of the Catholic view of marriage, as opposed to "marriage" in general. Still, this is a big step in the right direction.

For all the queer kids being raised in strict Catholic homes, they just got a life line. 

If the Pope can validate their sexuality and future relationships like this, that will do loads to bring their family around.

The head of a church that boasts over a billion members just validated same sex relationships, after spending hundreds of years condemning them.

You and I may not care about his opinion, but if Pope Francis comes out in support of same-sex unions, it will impact a lot of gay people’s lives in a powerful way.
