Quentin 5,569
Why did Marry The Night underperform? Yeah 'cause it did not flop but it just underperformed, it was still a big hit. TwilightMonster 1,323
Because it wasn't as radio friendly as the other singles. Katy and Gaga stan
Guest
MTN is one of her best songs ever and ill never forgive people for not taking notice! IMO (and a lot of other people's) BTW had too many singles, it should of just been 3. I think a lot of people were confused by the MV too, unless you're a LM you won't understand the story. I hope she performs it again in the future
Cookie Tookie 10,546
I just don’t think it’s meant for radio. It’s the best song on the album, but it’s too brilliant lyrically and sound wise for the general public to digest. They like dumb nonsense, as you can see by the charts. tomsches 17,330
Everybody already had the album, so why would they buy the song? And the video was as long as a sitcom episode, so people didn't stream it on Youtube.

27monster27 12,037
It was not the video or whether or not the song was radio friendly, it was because by this point the overexposure and bad management decisions for the era doomed Lady Gaga to not having the era be as successful as it could have been. he/him/his

sexy 3,215
She was coming off 11 straight Top 10 singles and was over-saturated Marry the Night was a weird choice for the 5th single; no question it would've done better as the lead or follow-up to Born This Way, instead of Judas, which also wasn't radio-friendly, but still managed to hit the Top 10 thanks to the sheer force of Gaga at the time. If you flipped MTN and Judas, no doubt Judas would have performed worse as Single 5 than MTN did, cuz you're right, MTN was by no means a flop. When you look at someone like Rihanna, she produces a handful of hits each album, but she's never called a flop when all her other singles miss the Top 20. So MTN hitting Top 30 after a long, huge era is pretty great.
Bonkers 28,580
I have a take that won't be popular. But I think it was that high-pitch synth instrument in the beginning. It's grating and kind of, like, annoying. Especially since it echos the vocal. I think it boils down to non-radio friendly production, and it was also at the end of the BTW era and things had started to slow down a bit by that point. TimisaMonster 31,073
It was the 5th single People were probably getting a lil tired of the HEAVY promo during BTW era It still did well, but by the ending of the BTW era into the tour...many had already bought the album so didn't need to buy the song separately Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify! TheAlexer 1,343
I personally thing that it underperformed because it sounded too similar to TEOG (on first listen). And by that point the GP had grown tired of the albums style in general.
