Nothing will ultimately dim a song for me if I like it but it is disappointing when the video isn't up to the same standard. Some of my first thoughts are for...

Great song but is this really the best they could do for the video? The skating in a circle is cool but that's about the only time things really look impressive. The first 35 seconds show so much potential for something awesome and then it just devolves into people dancing in bright clothes in an aeroplance hangar:

Everyone's aware of this classic. Adele kept us waiting for months for a video for her most famous, beloved song of all time and when we eventually got it we got probably the most simplistic video of her career. I honestly don't know why she bothered if she was just going to give us this. If she'd made this song today when music videos aren't as common as they once were, a music video might never have even happened:

While the song may be polarising, I like it, but I'm surprised the video isn't more polarising. It's the only part I really have a problem with. Some scenes, especially the nipple pasties bit, is just taking things a bit too far. I've got no problem with women expressing sexuality and having fun but wish they could make a sexy video and show their sexuality in a way that wasn't degrading and meant purely for the male gaze:

Miley was going through a phase at the time of making everything sexual when it had no need to be. This song could've gotten so much more praise and respect if the music video actually matched the emotional nature of its intent instead of making it unnecessarily controversial. It always makes me feel uncomfortable to watch it as while Miley may have wanted to do it, it just feels like she was being exploited:

And any videos from Sia where she was using that Maddie girl because I don't like to see kids used in ways in videos that suggests anything inappropriate and to see a little girl prancing about in a nude leotard just flicks a switch in my head that just says "do not want." And as much as I love Lana's music, I feel like she gave up on the cinematic masterpiece element of things after her debut and prefers more stripped back stuff now. Which is fine because I'm just here for the music but her videos were partly what drew a lot of her fans in. Kinda the same with Gaga, to be honest.

@StrawberryBlond I am the absolute opposite about Adele's Someone Like You. I find it super fitting and emotional, walking around town all gloomy reminiscing, black and white film, classic, the ending.....

I can't watch it and not cry from my own experience. It's always fun to know differences in the fandoms though, what works for some and not others, especially with the hits.

It does fit. I can't think of what else she could feasibly have given us. But the time she was taking suggested that there was a lot of time being put into doing something a bit more substantial and the end result was like...why did it take so long to come up with this concept? I wish Adele would make her videos a bit more interesting and have a change of scenery. In every video, it's nearly always sepia toned or made to look colour-less, she's usually the only one in the video, she's either sitting, lying down, standing still and occasionally, slowly walking. She even told us she would be dancing in the Send My Love video and I thought that meant actual trained dancing or maybe even dancing with someone and it was just her standing on the spot, moving her hips a little side to side and flicking her hands. Her songs aren't that hard to decipher more interesting concepts for. I've noticed that in an odd pattern, all her albums only have 2 music videos each. I don't think she likes making them and wants all the work on an album done before its released. The idea of making a video for a new single months after album release isn't really her thing and she's into creating music more than groundbreaking videos. I get people like her music but why she has millions of Vevo subscribers is strange to me as all her videos are so uneventful and she only gives her fans 2 per album cycle and each album only comes out every 4+ years.

Yes, she probably doesn't like making videos. I do think that she gives enough in them, I like that they are all subtle and just focus on her as a singer singing. I think she gets all of the views because people just go to the video to hear the song and sing along, I know that is what I do, with her in particular.

May I ask which videos by Lana, as a super fan, do you not absolutely LOVE? Do you like Lana's sister Chuck's work with Lana? I notice a lot of super fans hate to know it when Lana has hired Chuck to do something for her. I Love Chuck's work with Lana especially. I like her style and styling of Lana.

Exactly, where else are they going to watch it/hear it? Considering Adele didn't even have her work on streaming services, it makes more sense. They're maybe there for the song, not so much the video. It means it's hard to judge for any video what people are truly giving their like or dislike to. Is it for the song only, the video only or both? There's some videos where it's obvious which of these it is but for others, it's not so clear. Adele's video stats are very hard to judge in that respect. If people keep liking them, it certainly sends the message that this simple style is what the public want but chances are they're just liking it for the song.

What Lana videos don't I like? I can't say I've ever actively disliked any of her stuff, at most I can find it merely a bit boring. Like I said, anything post Paradise has left me cold. Doin' Time was one of the few that was fairly decent in a long time apart from Lust For Life maybe. I never liked that cheap looking fire effect towards the end of West Coast, Ultraviolence didn't really need that weird wedding style video and as gorgeous as those shots were in Music To Watch Boys To, I had a deliciously dark storyline in my head that I would've loved her for to use in it but all we got were pretty images, so I was more than a bit let down on that one. Honestly, I don't know who directed all her videos so I don't know where her sister got involved. I assume it was during the NFR era? I've not been a big fan of that eyeliner she's worn in recent videos, is that what you mean by the styling?

The Edge of Glory

I remember when it premiered on some dancing show... it ended and I just thought Damn, is that it? I hate it. especially after all the hype for the planned music video. I appreciate it now for being a sort of premade tribute to Clarence but my god... it's such a bad video.

Million Reasons maybe. Gaga is usually the one to win me over with a song by the video, when I don't love it at first. I never latched on to Million Reasons but I don't hate the song. Some of Lana Del Rey's latest ones, High By The Beach, Music To Watch Boys To, White Mustang and Doin' Time.

Reject False Icons

accelerate weird sound took me some time to appreciate but I don’t understand xtina’s team.

After a 6 years hiatus you come back with a basic af music video, She had us eating from her hand with the PAPER shoot, if she had released that interview and the next day she dropped a similar music video for Maria, she would have made a much bigger impact

I can see that, but I prefer Adele's minimal style videos. I feel they reflect her nicely. I wonder if when she comes back, she'll be totally different and in full make-over mood. It will be interesting, can't wait for her to come back, bad or good, it's exciting.

I think Chuck Grant has had a large hand in many of Lana's iconic photoshoots and stylings, also many videos. It's hard to gather all of her work with Lana, for sure. I love the eye-liner look that you've mentioned, but I love everything vintage, so that's just me. I am old fashioned classic minimalist. I think that Chuck is credited with Venice Bitch video, Norman F***ing Rockwell video and Mariners Apartment Complex for sure, but had a hand in others, it seems. Lana has so much work that she released herself and it confuses me. I like that vintage style that Chuck often uses with Lana.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

I wouldn’t say a video ruined a song for me but definitely been times it took the hype off. Dua Lipa’s video for Dont Start Now and Physical, more recently, kept the songs from elevating to icon status for me. She could have had a Bad Romance or Can’t Get You Out Of My Head moment but missed out. Million Reasons was also a missed opportunity although Gaga’s pink outfit and long blonde hair alone was iconic..

For me a great video can make me love a song even more. 911 is such an example.
