Ziggy 11,874
I think the tone was a bit...eh? And felt especially weird for an SNL monologue. It felt like untested material, to me, because the core of the joke “why do white gays get the longest month and black folks get the shortest?” isn’t itself terrible, but I think the delivery was a bit clunky and sounded more like a rant than a joke imo. I also think it’s important to acknowledge that he’s married to a Black woman so this was probably influenced, at least in part, by her life. To that end, it probably would have come off better not coming from a straight white dude. so my thought is, not a bad idea, so so execution and is he the right mouthpiece for said thought? Like, I think his presentation of it kind of posits that gay people aren’t Black and erases intersectionality which I doubt was his intention but goes back to what I said about it sounding like untested material. I think this would have come off better from a Black gay comedian rather than a straight Middle Aged white dude. For Burr to say it sounds a bit out of nowhere whereas if a Black gay comedian said it I would be like “ah ok this is from observation and reflection on your life. It’s consistent.”
