Greyhound racing coming to an end in US

In 2018, Florida’s voters had the chance to approve a constitutional amendment—Amendment 13—that would ban betting on greyhounds as of December 31, 2020. The proposal, which effectively bans greyhound racing, was brought by critics of the sport who contend dog racing is cruel and inhumane.

The racing industry bet on beating the amendment, arguing that its supporters were exaggerating stories of dogs’ mistreatment. The industry spent just a fraction of what supporters did on the campaign, believing the sport was popular enough that the majority of Floridians wouldn’t vote to ban it.

They misjudged. Nearly 70 percent of voters said yes to the shutdown. Now the tracks must close by New Year’s.

I totally missed this somehow but that's so exciting.  I'm thankful those dogs won't have to endure this anymore and that the abusive breeding practices that support it end.

Hopefully they don’t put down the greyhounds and they get adopted out. My friend actually has a retired racing greyhound and he is a big sweetie

My family has adopted four greyhounds over the years. 45 mile-per-hour couch potatoes. Amazing dogs.

I mean it is in their nature to run, but they are also very lazy. But I think most people who breed them for racing purposes are very aware of that. For example my friend’s greyhound was ‘retired’ because they were unable to train him to follow the ‘rabbit’/flag that they chase when racing, not because he got too old or ‘broken’ to race.

of course there is always going to be people who are cruel/abusive, just like with any industry that breeds animals

but people need to understand that most dog breeds were bred for certain tasks and it is in their nature/instincts now. My friend has a Bernese mountain dog/st Bernard mix and even though it has never pulled a sled he still enjoys ‘pulling’ because it is just part of that breed. Just like collies and sheep dogs will always exhibit ‘herding’ behaviours.

Greyhounds like to run very fast for short periods of time, and they do need that exercise. But they also like to be very lazy afterwards. Is there an ethical way to race them? I really don’t know but it is not necessarily something they are cruelly forced to do.

I understand your point of view, but the races industry is very cruel, there is of course a minority that actually cares about their dogs and giving them their best life and if they lose they still supports them, but then there are the monsters that can see their dog with a broken leg and just hit them in the belly out of anger because they lost.

There's barely a grey area in races with animal imo, so it's either the best owners or the worst.. I think all races with animals should be illegal.

I actually agree completely but most people find that to be an extremist viewpoint so I was trying to see the other side. The fact is both horses and greyhounds require the exercise and unfortunately for some the only way they can get that exercise is through racing or for horses being ridden by humans. 

Personally i think animals should not be bred for sport/profit at all.
