Philippines Deports Convicted Killer, Marine

The Philippines has deported a U.S Marine who was found guilty of killing transgender Jennifer Laude in 2014, according to the country's Bureau of Immigration. The case sparked protests in favor of transgender rights in the country, and was also a topic of discussion for foreign policy experts on how it would affect relations between the United States and the island nation. 

The Visiting Forces Agreement between the two countries provides that the U.S retains involvement in the legal proceedings involving alleged crimes committed by a member of their armed forces; if the case is determined to have a significant impact on the Philippines this involvement may not apply. In practice, it means that the U.S embassy enjoys custody over military members accused of crimes. Opponents of the arrangement say that it gives special privileges to Americans and is dismissive of the due process rights that Filipinos are supposed to have, though the contract also includes U.S military support to Filipino forces in several areas; the U.S Embassy said in a statement that the processes leading to conviction "took place under Philippine jurisdiction and law..." 

President Duterte pardoned Joseph Pemberton before his deportation, interrupting a 12-year prison sentence. It is unclear what the next steps for Pemberton will be when he arrives in the U.S, though he is never allowed back into the Philippines under any conditions. Pemberton operated anti-tank weaponry prior to his arrest and conviction. He thanked Duterte and apologized to Laude's loved ones through a lawyer.

I've been thinking about this the whole day. I even cried about it. You know what's sick? The guy was never sent to an actual jail. He got the special treatment and got locked up in an airconditioned container van. A lot of Filipinos don't even have ACs in their homes. The guy looked so healthy and buff like he had gym equipment in his room. The fact that the president literally said he was treated unfairly and granted him absolute pardon was a slap in the face to Jennifer's family. He should be imprisoned for life after what he did to Jennifer. If he wasn't American and just a local citizen, and if Jennifer wasn't trans, he would have never gotten out of prison.

He really went from having to serve jail for 12 years to 10 years, and because of our ****ing president, it went down to five ****ing years. 

I'm sorry, but this guy doesn't deserve to live, let alone be free and achieve his dreams. Jennifer will never have that chance anymore.

Also, **** Duterte. A ****ing pig that cannot even defend his own countrymen.

honestly dont accept any form of misconduct to any human being,

the thing here was Jennifer's family agreed to receive money, not sure about the whole agreement but i think thats why the man got deported.

still, any form of violence should have corresponding punishment, it's just unacceptable for the rest of the citizens how this one ended.

it just ruled along with the court as well as the family's decision to receive payment from all the damages
