You mean... they are racists...

It’s not racism lol

It’s called colorism. People of the same race are considered beautiful when they have fair skin. It also happens in Africa where lightskin women are considered the most beautiful out there

No. :lmao:

This is a wrong interpretation of the song.

Let me clear this up. Bollywood has been and is racist, misogynist, homophobic and casteist. So, no point in defending Bollywood lol.

But the backlash this song is facing is totally off the radar.

The "fair-skinned lady" thing is a naively wrong interpretation of the hindi word "goriya". It usually means girl.

It's like the skinny legend thing lol. There is no intention of referring to being skinny or thin.

Here's the director's explanation: “First, without any hesitation or excuses we want to apologise to anyone offended. We assure you that the lyric in question was never intended racially. In fact, the term ‘goriya’ has been so often and traditionally used in Indian songs to address a girl, that it didn’t occur to any of us to interpret it in the literal manner. Also the comparison with Beyonce is simply meant to be a street-smart guy flattering a girl who is trying to impress that her dancing/performance is worth comparing to even Beyonce who we all see as the final word, the epitome of talent, beauty, performance, style and attitude. We are all huge fans, and there was never any question of disrespect.”

Lyricist Kumaar added further, “Goriya as a word has been used in many Hindi songs earlier. Our idea was to simply use a synonym to ‘girl’. There is no derogation intended - we revere beauty of global celebrity Beyoncé and don’t mean to hurt any of her fans.”

THIS.

Thank you for pointing this out. Also that dislikes are majorly bcoz the lead in the video is a nepotism kid and theres a real huge outrage going on against the nepotism kids at the moment in India. If ppl think this dislikes are something they need to see the sadak2 trailer dislikes.

Are u indian? cause @Wet Fire is. udk these words

Yeah I am actually .. :triggered:

it doesn't matter if some people use the word just to mean "girl".. the fact is that the original connotation is "fair skinned girl"

this is colorism 101.. it doesn't surprise me that there are people defending this tragic song seeing as colorism is so commonplace in India

Lol no one's defending this song.

Queer also once had a really negative connotation. But it changed its meaning over time.

Also, the word fair means at times "with a lighter skin tone" and at times "beautiful" (without the skintone reference). In India, no one uses the word fair to denote simply beautiful. So in India, it only has the skintone reference in its meaning.

Similarly, goriya is losing its older meaning.

EDIT: I think the conflict is also because in different parts of India "goriya" means differently. In some parts it has lost the previous colour connotation, and in some parts, it hasn't. I guess, the songwriter belongs to a culture where it simply means girl. I agree he should've been more careful and thought about those who still take "goriya" to mean fair-skinned girl. But I'm not upset over this since he clearly stated he is sorry.

Chile.. what India do you live in where you speak on behalf of 1 billion people and decided that no one uses 'fair skinned' as a compliment? :rip: it's so commonplace..

just look at Indian media (you won't have to look very far, just see this new music video for example). This actress is so pale skinned. It is creepy how much colourism there is in the Bollywood industry.

Chile...you're reading my comments totally wrong. I never claimed there's no colorism in Bollywood or India. I'm not that naive, no one is.

EDIT: I meant that the word goriya is used by some to mean "fair skinned" (this fair skinned is used by many as compliment) and goriya is used by some to mean (beautiful) girl (but not because of being fair)

And if someone uses fair-skinned as a compliment (and this this compliment shows the extent of colorism in India), that has nothing to do with what I said. I'm having a whole different argument here that has to do with why they might have used the word "goriya" without knowing that you or others might get offended by it.

Also, no. It doesn't work that way. Connotations change over time. Words lose meaning. (Fair means light-skinned, it also means (in literary texts)/meant simply beautiful or pleasing in appearance i.e. a fair girl (beautiful girl, but not because she is light-skinned girl).

Colorism exists in every single POC community, not just Bollywood.
