I don't think going purely by sales is any better though. They can also be manipulated (like streaming) if fans bought the same song or album over and over again to help artists chart higher (i.e. Taylor Swift, the troll song, stuck with u, and numerous other albums and singles this year). The same can be said with streaming (though manipulated by fake streams) so neither are better than the other imo, but I do prefer it being based by what people listen to because it's at least a bit more accurate that way.
