An elephant who has become a cause célèbre for animal rights activists around the world will be allowed to leave his Pakistani zoo and be transferred to better conditions, the animal welfare group helping with the case has said.

Dubbed the “world’s loneliest elephant” by his supporters, Kaavan has languished at a zoo in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad for more than 35 years.

Martin Bauer, a spokesman for Four Paws, said on Saturday that the elephant has finally been given medical approval to travel, most likely to Cambodia, where he will find companionship and better conditions.

Rights activists have lobbied for his relocation since 2016.

Head Empty

To be honest the older I get, the more I despise zoo's. You can always see that the enclosures are way too small and artificial for most animals. Of course there are exceptions but overall it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

TSUNAMI

I will never forgive those Indians that fed elephant with the fireworks and it died, pregnant.

Animals are too innocent for scums like us. We don't deserve them with us.

this. Even if they raise money for wild species with charity or whatsoever there is no way how these enclosures can substitute natural habitats. Zoos are a heritage from colonialism and the sake of it was and still is entertainment. It’s frustrating how people are left to believe that zoos play a big role in preventing mass extinction when in reality wild habitats keep disappearing.

He's been alone for 35 years? Elephants are very smart and social creatures, I can't imagine how lonely he must have been.

God I hate Zoos so much. I get they treat their animals well but honestly no zoo will ever match the space these animals travel naturally, Especially when it comes to the aquatic animals. Just think how small those "Big" enclosures are for elephants in comparison to the jungles they live in the wild.

Hey I am an actual elephant zookeeper. I completely understand there are some zoos that are terrible but please don’t umbrella it all under one assumption. I understand how you feel and honestly wish modern zoos didn’t have to exist but the sad reality is that they do a lot of work in keeping dying populations alive, protecting natural habitat, and supporting local organizations. If you have questions, I would be happy to answer anything.

This breaks my heart. 35 years is a long time it must've been pure hell for that elephant to go through that. I wish we let animals just live their ****ing lives where they're supposed to be. Zoos need to be over in the future, it's not right anymore

I don't really work directly with the keepers but I basically help out guests, answer questions about where things are or the about animals themselves etc. I spend a lot of time in a walk-through enclosure with roaming kangaroos and emus and make sure the people and animals are interacting safely.

Do you feel him sir?
