In a revealing new documentary, Paris Hilton opens up about a trauma she’s never publicly discussed.

“I feel like the whole world thinks they know me because I’ve been playing this character for so long,” Hilton says in the film, “This Is Paris,” which then cuts to a clip of her 2000s reality show “The Simple Life."

“That’s not me,” Hilton, now 39, continues. “No one really knows who I am. Something happened in my childhood that I’ve never talked about with anyone. I still have nightmares about it. I wish I could bring a camera into my dreams and show you what it’s like. It’s terrifying. And I relive that every night.”

In 1996, Hilton’s family moved from Los Angeles to New York. Hilton says she struggled with bullying at her new school and her parents’ expectations for her and younger sister Nicky Hilton to attend etiquette classes and follow their strict rules. She rebelled by sneaking out to nightclubs, where she felt “accepted.”

It was then, she says, that parents Kathy and Rick Hilton sent her to a series of “emotional growth schools.” After running away from the first two, Hilton was sent to Utah’s Provo Canyon School, which she describes as “the worst of the worst.”

“You’re sitting on a chair staring at a wall all day long, getting yelled at or hit,” she says in the film. “I felt like a lot of the people who worked there got off on torturing children and seeing them naked. They would prescribe everyone all these pills. I didn’t know what they were giving me. I would just feel so tired and numb. Some people in that place were just gone, like the lights are on, no one’s home. A lot of people were on suicide watch, and I was so scared that was going to happen to me.”

“Eventually I found out a way to not take the pills,” she adds. “But everyone would tell on everyone, and they found a Kleenex with all of the pills in it. I got into so much trouble for that. Solitary confinement, like something out of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.’ They’d make people take their clothes off and go in there for 20 hours. It felt like I was going crazy. Someone was in the other room that was in a straitjacket screaming. I was just freezing, I was starving. I was alone, and I was scared.”

Hilton says her parents were still in New York and she didn’t notify them of what was happening for fear of being punished. She alleges that the school’s staff told her, “We’re just going to tell your parents you’re a liar and they’re not going to believe you.”

I've always liked Paris and could never understand how people weren't aware she was playing a character in the media. 

She's always seemed actually intelligent, and I hope she can someday heal from that trauma.

every celebrity has a past, this is exactly why we cannot judge them because we don’t know what they’ve gone through and the extent of it.

paris is literally my idol, whether that simple life character she was playing was real or not (we know it wasn’t), she’s still an icon and she’s really made a name for herself since then. i hope her abusers rot in hell.

I never knew much about ha but 3 years ago there was an earthquake here in mexico, she went to one of the poorest, most affected areas and start looking for people to help her rebuild the houses that were lost. The people in that area is so poor the goverment do not even care about. Well fast forward one year ago she went back to that area to verify that the neighborhood was indeed built and no money was waste or stolen. She built these people such good quality, strong houses, way better than the ones that they had. Around 200 i think. She just did it, i dont know why, it was so random. All my respect to her.

Paris played the ditzy blonde act. But in reality she is super talented, very smart, and seems like a sweetheart.

I have always liked her too and thought that she is smarter than anyone ever gave her credit for and has always just seemed like an actual good person and sweetheart. I have wondered about her background a little, since she seems to have trouble finding her place with love, though she tries, I have always related to her. Her sister actually seems very lucky and well adjusted, so I have noted the differences. I also recall Paris going into a bit of talk on that as well on Watch What Happens Live, when she was a guest. Loved it. I could respect her talking points there, she seemed very cool, well mannered and fair with Andy Cohen.

I hate to hear this cruelty, but it is also not surprising, we often find out about abusive behavior happening, even amongst the famous or especially in their lives. I hope she finds her peace, love and happiness in her future. It is a shame.

I see the school is still open with horrible scary reviews! Many women on Youtube did videos about how abusive the place is. Why would billionaires send their child to a random school in utah they know nothing about?

The aristocracy have always been very orthodox in their schooling techniques. It’s sad but it’s a consequence of being ultra wealthy. Like having security guards follow your every move. Imagine being Paris’s mum or dad and raising two little girls. You don’t know who could be plotting to kidnap them for a ransom. You don’t know who to trust. So therefore you place them under the strictest most conservative places you can. It’s a sorry state of affairs but it’s the world we live in. Rich kids are easy targets.

Wow I’m so shook, so she and Gaga were through bad stuff too in that catholic school, I though she would be so popular and well adapted among other millionaires, and Gaga would be the different kid, but apparently things are not always what they seem to be
